Comanche Review

Comanche was initially a multiplayer-only title

By Polina GreyfieldPublished 4 years ago 5 min read

Comanche was initially a multiplayer-only title. It was later expanded to include single-player modes in Early Access. The fifth installment in this venerable series has been released. It leaves a negative impression almost immediately. There are some glimmerings of hope and promise but it never comes true. Comanche was not able to return, just like Aquanox Deep Descent. At least, not in this way. Comanche is not a memorable game.

Comanche4 was released in 2001 and is the last entry. These NovaLogic classics were futuristic military masterpieces at the time that combined simulation and arcade to appeal more people. Comanche tries to do some of this, but it doesn't quite succeed. There are many differences: The titular Comanche, which is based on a real-world Helicopter, doesn't move as fast and there's no points system. The classic crosshair is what it does well, but that's not the most important thing. The game's biggest problem is its setting in the near future, which I believe is a far cry from the original series. It doesn't work for me, even though I appreciate the effort to do something new or advance the series.

It prompts you to choose from simulation or arcade controls after the tutorial. I chose arcade. Although the controls are intuitive, they feel great and can be a bit awkward at first. However, you soon get used to them. Although I initially thought the game didn't have a cockpit view, if you change the controls to simulate, you will be in it. The cockpit view can be accessed by selecting it from the options menu. However, it takes a lot of clicking to access it. It feels like an afterthought. Simulator controls feel great. The game caters to both types of play very well.

Although it was not originally planned, the campaign now includes a story campaign. Only seven missions are called operations, which tell a coherent story. Each mission has a checkpoint that bookmarks certain events. This is where you can replay your favourite moments from each mission. Each of the first two operations took over an hour to complete. The precedent was set, and each subsequent mission took only thirty minutes. Although it's not obvious why missions become shorter, it seems like developers abandoned the idea of making every mission equal in length. One mission was about gathering information and then moving on. Comanche presents a drone that can hack and attack the enemy. Although it is an interesting novelty, the appeal of the drone is diminishing over time. You'll often have to accomplish the same objectives. To introduce variety, the drone serves as a crutch throughout the campaign. Although it is modern and makes the game feel fresh, too much reliance on the drone can lead to a dangerous omission.

In the first two missions, the game instantly experiments with new abilities. It is obvious that the game was originally designed for multiplayer. Some missions are combat-focused. You'll be able to aim, shoot missiles and fire off chaffs. You can also use your cloak ability to stealth-manage missions. You will be using your helicopter to fire rockets and shoot guns. Stealth is not something you'll think of. Although the stealth isn’t terrible, it’s not what you came to the series for. One moment in the campaign was frustrating, which I cannot forgive. It is where your Comanche was equipped with a railgun. The arcade controls make it difficult to shoot and even hit anything. To make the shot, I had to switch between the simulation controls and use my mouse and keyboard. To finally win the mission, I replayed it over and over. It was very difficult to complete the task in the time allowed. The only time the game was "hard" was when I was on Normal. The campaign missions are incredibly slow. Although the voiceovers before, during, or after campaign missions are supposed to give personality to the mission, it's so boring and cartoony that it's hard for you not get invested. Comanche has the unfortunate habit of sending its helicopter into narrow, dark areas. This is far from the open combat areas of previous games.

Other singleplayer modes exist, but they are not as important. The tutorial can be replayed and there is a target area to practice weapons and abilities. There's also pilot training. You can fly through rings with no timer by using the three-part pilot training. This is a relaxed way to learn the controls and improve your skills. Conflicts are the final and most important mode. These are eleven separate missions that provide challenges to reach a specific objective without dying. If you think the campaign isn't challenging enough, Conflicts may be the right challenge for you.

I would love to tell you more about multiplayer but I can't. It was impossible to play. I waited and waited and waited. I waited, waited, and waited for someone to come along. I checkedSteamDBThere were always less than ten players. It was a great game! There is enoughThere are many players, but not enough to make it a community. You will need a group of dedicated friends and good timing to play online. The game was removed from Early Access on August 26th and is currently not being played. It's difficult to sell a game that was designed solely for multiplayer.

The game runs on Unreal Engine 4. It looks amazing and performs well. With everything maxed, I was able get 165fps without any problems. However, many of the locations, such as the jungle, desert and mountains, are as generic as those I have just mentioned. Although the interiors of the bases that you invade look beautiful, they are also very similar. Although it's an amazing game, the game as a whole lacks any personality or identity.

Comanche does not live up to its predecessors in almost every way. This is not a huge release. It does try some new and interesting things, but it is not enough. Due to multiplayer dying on arrival, half of the game is unaccessible. You're unlikely to ever see it unless your coordinate. Although it has a very short campaign that is not satisfying, there's a challenging mode that will really put you to the test. It's a cheap game that's still fun. However, you should spend your time with Comanche.
