Completing the Survival Horror Saga
My struggle with Resident Evil’s aging classics and why the latest remake rumors have me hooked.

Remakes are often more exciting news than brand-new IPs or even sequels, but when it comes to the Resident Evil franchise, it hits even harder for me. This is because I truly love the Resident Evil series from the bottom of my heart, and I have played almost every single entry in the timeline. Among the only few titles that I still have to play—which are mostly obscure spin-offs—there is that one specific, major game I have always wanted to play but never actually did: Resident Evil: Code: Veronica X.
I tried to sit down and play the original game recently. I really tried hard to get over the dated, low-resolution graphics and the notoriously difficult "tank" controls, but I simply couldn't get into the flow of it. It simply hasn’t aged well in this modern era of gaming. However, since I have played almost all of the other entries, that one game I was missing to complete the whole series has always been an irritating thought in the back of my mind. It feels like a gap in my knowledge of the lore. I wanted to complete the story and see Claire Redfield’s journey through to the end, yet I couldn't because playing this game decades after it was originally released simply doesn't work for my modern sensibilities.
I heard these rumors about a Code: Veronica X remake earlier, but you know how the internet is with rumors; most of the time they are just that—rumors. But now, finally, it looks like the stars are aligning and we are actually getting a Code: Veronica X remake. Honestly, I couldn't be happier about it. I have a lot of belief in the quality of these projects when it comes to Resident Evil, as Capcom has been on a winning streak. Every remake—even Resident Evil 3, which many fans felt wasn’t as lengthy or as good as the original—is still an amazing, high-quality game in its own right.
I still wish that we could get more remastered versions of these games, similar to the RE1 HD remaster, because that specific project felt amazing to play. It is basically the exact same game, but it looks sharp and atmospheric enough for nowadays' standards. But the full "RE Engine" remakes are really amazing too. While they are not always entirely true to the original source material, the changes are usually minimal and they keep the integrity of the original game's soul intact. That is why I believe that RE: Code: Veronica X would be a legendary experience. With new modern controls, current-gen graphics, and that classic, old-school Resident Evil atmosphere, I believe they couldn't go wrong with this one.
There is definitely room for Capcom to remake even more games than just Code: Veronica. We know through the grapevine that they are likely working on a Resident Evil 5 remake, and that also is something I’m very excited about, especially for the co-op potential. But what I would really love to see after that are Revelations 1 and 2 remakes. These games were not bad at all, but the gameplay felt slightly outdated even when they first came out because they were originally designed for handheld systems. I finished Revelations 1 and never quite finished Revelations 2, and I honestly believe both games would be fantastic if they were rebuilt to be more modern and scary.
One of my favorites in the franchise, Resident Evil 6, doesn’t really need a remake in the traditional sense, as it is still a very good-looking game by today’s standards. Nevertheless, I wouldn't mind buying this game again if they remastered it with better textures and lighting. So, what do you think—will they eventually remake every single one of their titles? Because as a hardcore fan who wants the whole collection on one modern console, I wouldn't mind at all.
I still wonder if they will ever go back and remake Resident Evil 1 or Resident Evil Zero in the new over-the-shoulder style. Resident Evil 1 is a truly amazing masterpiece. And like I said, the current HD remaster is great, but I think all of us would love to see the Spencer Mansion in modern graphics with modern 3rd-person gameplay. Are you a Resident Evil fan? What are your favorite titles in the long-running series, and what do you think about the current direction of these Capcom remakes?
