NewsBreak What Potential Writers Need to know

There are many online articles about the site but many are no longer up to date.

Is NewsBreak for you?

I read a number of articles about NewsBreak prior to becoming a contributor and found out that much of the information was now outdated. What I am about to share could become obsolete one day but in August 2022 it is still relevant.

At this present time, NewsBreak does not offer a base pay and pays per view only. This is not a set fee like Vocal Media but fluctuates with each article. I am not certain how the algorithm does it but I have received as little as 10 cents per 1,000 views and as much as $11.00. My articles overall average between $4.30 and $7.00.

Getting started

In order to get started, you must sign up and write 10 articles of your choice and have at least 100 subscribed NewsBreak followers. This means for example you might have 300 people following you but at least 100 of them have to be signed up to receive Newsbreak updates which come via cell phone and email.

Most contributors I spoke with said it happens within a week to 10 days and for me, it was six days. Next comes the long waiting period. NewsBreak usually approves articles within a few hours. I have noticed on weekends it can take as long as 10 or 12 hours.

Final approval for me to become a paid contributor took about six weeks. I have heard other writers say anywhere from two weeks to 36 days. I sent an email and asked why this process took so long and was told they had an enormous amount of applications and only a few workers to process them so please be patient.

You are not paid for any views you get for those first 10 submissions or any others until you are officially approved so you might want to wait for approval before submitting more stories. When you sign up you have to get an account with Tipalti which is similar to Paypal and they need IRS verification in order to pay you. I submitted a copy of my Income Tax return which had the necessary information and it was accepted.

Views and Impressions

NewsBreak does something that I have not seen on any other writing platform. Not only do they show you how many people have viewed or read your articles but they also list how many impressions you receive. Impressions are created when someone clicks on your story but does not stay on the page long enough for it to count as a view.

This can become pretty frustrating because you might see that you had 200,000 impressions but only 1,000 views. NewsBreak requires only 250 words and sometimes with breaking news you may not have much more than that. It is recommended that writing 450-500 words or more may keep people engaged longer on your article but this is not always the case.

Local news is popular

NewsBreak says that local stories are the heart of the community and they prefer articles about happenings in your neck of the woods. You can, however, submit articles that are for the entire United States. The site requires that you give fact-based information with links to verify what you are saying in your story so opinion pieces are not going to work.

If you can write breaking news and put yourself in the mode of writing a newspaper article the NewBreak might just be for you. If you lean more toward fiction writing and storytelling then this is not the place for your writing.

The site pays once a month on the 15th for all you have earned the previous month. There are initial delays in views being reported and NewsBreak says it can take up to 48 hours. Your daily earnings show up just after 9:00 p.m. each night and my final totals for July were tabulated on August 2nd.

As mentioned earlier things are subject to change but this is how NewsBreak is operating at this present time. On a final note please share your work on social media but with your followers getting updates when your articles are published and possibly sharing your stories there is not the same pressure as when writing for sites that don't promote your work.

As a side note please read NewsBreak articles in their entirety so the author will have credit as a view and not an impression.

Thank you so much for this. I had been looking for updated information on NewsBreak but could never find it. It sometimes must be heartbreakingly when the difference between the impression and reads are huge

Thank for this piece! I appreciated how you broke it down and gave more detailed descriptions than some pieces I've read about similar topics :)
