Mysterious creatures at the bottom of the sea
Species to be discovered

There is no doubt that the ocean is one of the most fascinating places on our planet. Both the ocean and space surround us, yet we know so little about them. Every time an explorer dives into the ocean, it’s almost certain they will surface having discovered a new species or creature. However, sometimes unknown beings wash ashore, or expeditions come across phenomena that defy explanation.
This article collects a few of these mysterious cases:
The Shark Tagged in 2003
In 2003, a great white shark was tagged off the coast of Australia to study its behavior. The tagged shark was a 9-meter-long, strong, and healthy female named Alpha. Four months later, the tag was found washed ashore. According to the recorded data, on November 24th at 4 a.m., the shark suddenly plunged 520 meters at great speed. Additionally, the ocean temperature changed rapidly from 46°C to 78°C in just seconds. Researchers concluded that Alpha ended up in the stomach of another creature, with the tag recording data from within the predator’s body for eight days before being excreted and washing ashore. Theories suggest that a massive cannibalistic great white shark or an unknown sea predator might have been responsible.
The Mysterious Carcass on Russia’s Sashen Island
In early 2015, a mysterious carcass washed ashore on Sashen Island, off the eastern coast of Russia. The 11-meter-long body was covered in blood, with bones protruding, and it had a long, beak-like structure and fur-covered skin. Initially, it was identified as a rare species of dolphin, but the fur and size made this unlikely. Some theories proposed it was a beaked whale, while others speculated it might be an entirely unknown sea creature.
The 52 Hz Whale
Known as the loneliest whale in the ocean, the 52 Hz whale produces a unique call that resonates at a much higher frequency than any other whale. First recorded in 1989, the whale’s call is at 52 Hz—far above the usual range of blue whales (10–39 Hz) and fin whales (around 20 Hz). This extraordinary sound could belong to an unknown species or perhaps the last surviving member of its kind.
The Mariana Trench Mystery
Japanese researchers studying marine life near the Mariana Trench—a region believed to be the deepest part of the ocean—lowered a bait-filled container to a depth of one mile. Initially, smaller creatures appeared, followed by a 6-meter-long deep-sea shark. Suddenly, a massive creature emerged, estimated to be between 30–50 meters long. Possible explanations included a colossal Pacific sleeper shark or the long-thought-extinct megalodon. Also, Recently, caves were discovered deep within the Mariana Trench, revealing traces of microbial life inside. These organisms can survive extreme pressure and a sunless environment. Could it be possible that more advanced life forms are hidden deep within the caves?
Bioluminescent Creatures
Many deep-sea creatures possess bioluminescent abilities that astonish scientists. During one expedition, researchers observed unique creatures emitting complex light patterns. One being displayed such intricate signals that scientists theorized it might be using them for communication. Could this suggest the existence of intelligent life forms in the unexplored depths of the ocean?
The mysteries of the deep sea continue to amaze us, leaving us wondering what other secrets the ocean holds. Could there be undiscovered species or phenomena waiting to be found in the vast, uncharted waters? The secrets of the ocean depths continue to serve as a source of inspiration and mystery for humanity. With each passing day, science moves closer to uncovering the unknown – yet as the list of discoveries grows, so does the number of questions. Who knows what mysteries still await us?
