More Monoliths: Those Rascally Space Men Are At It Again

It’s reminiscent of four years ago. Strange monoliths are popping up and causing a stir. What’s the meaning behind them, and who’s responsible?

Gass Peak, Las Vegas, Nevada

Law Enforcement’s recent discovery of a monolith has the world buzzing. This past weekend, authorities discovered one of the oddities shimmering in the hills above the city. A search and rescue team found the structure near Gass Peak within the Nevada Desert National Wildlife Refuge.

It wasn’t the first such find in recent years. In a remote area of Utah, barely accessible without a helicopter, authorities discovered another 12-foot-tall metal monolith in November 2020. Since then, similar events have been reported in Romania, California, and downtown Las Vegas.

The current mystery includes a ten-foot-tall monolith on a hill in Wales, found by a jogger and shared online. Craig Muir claims to hike into the area frequently, which is described as a muddy bluff. His claims that the March discovery included no footprints or tire tracks to attribute the thing being there raise the speculation on how it got there and what they mean.

Are they all the work of “The Most Famous Artist?” That’s the name of an artist collective that claimed responsibility for planting the Utah Monolith and one that appeared near the same time around Atascadero, California. Or, have they taken credit for recreation and capitalized on the frenzy?

Neither Matty Mo nor the artist collective known as “the Most Famous Artist” have come out and said it was them. One of Mo’s Instagram broadcasts reportedly shows him being covert about his or the group's responsibility. Even though nobody has officially been proven responsible, there is a timeline that could point one in the right direction.

November, 18, 2020: Utah

November 28, 2020: Romania — Just as the Utah monolith was removed, another was found halfway around the world in Romania. Found in another remote area, the Romanian monolith was discovered at an archaeological site outside of Piatra Neamt.

December 2, 2020: California — Days after the Romanian discovery, another monolith was discovered on Pine Moutain in Atascadero, California.

December 2020 — After the buzz about the original monoliths, many more appeared. An article in Business Insider estimated 87 total before 2021. Many were believed to be copycats as they appeared in Russia, Columbia, Spain, Pittsburgh, Joshua Tree, Vegas, Albuquerque, and more.

And then they were gone, or were they?

March 12, 2024: Wales — The monolith was discovered by a jogger, on a muddy bluff, with no tire tracks or footprints to explain it being placed there.

June 17th, 2024: Las Vegas — The newest Las Vegas Monolith

Elaborate hoax? Visits from another world? There is no answer. Circumstances surrounding their existence, disappearances, and strange reappearances continue to confound authorities and fans of the incidents.

Taking into account the great distance, locations, and startling lack of evidence pointing to how they are where they are, there remains only a number of them that can be dispelled as copycat monoliths. Many are placed in areas where they are barely accessible to the public, such as the one in Idaho that is so remote it’s hardly accessible by the Bureau of Land Management without using a helicopter.

They’ve appeared as far apart as Russia and California, which isn’t concrete evidence, except that when the Russian Monolith was found it was during a time of restricted travel. Many of the 2020 monoliths were found around the world during a time when the world’s travel was restricted by COVID-19.

How do we explain the monoliths? How may not be the right question. How did they get there? How were they placed? Instead, we may have to shift to why.

The answer may be simple.

We’re once again, four years later, amid miserable news cycles. Who isn’t tired of the politics as we gear up for the 2024 election? The Russians and the North Koreans signing a military pact is something the world is concerned about, particularly as Russia continues to wage war in Ukraine. Israel and Gaza are still going at it. America is falling apart.

Much like 2020, the monoliths appeared at a time of great concern. They appeared during an election year. They appeared when millions were dying, and the world was scared. They appeared when there was a need to distract ourselves. That’s the common denominator between the two years.

But, it could have taken our little green friends that long to fly home and get back. You decide.
