On June 12, 2025, an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, Flight AI 171, crashed minutes after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, India, in a tragic event that rocked the country and the international aviation community. There were 12 crew members and 230 passengers on board the aircraft, which was headed to London Gatwick. The Boeing 787, a plane renowned for its safety and cutting-edge technology, was involved in the first deadly crash. At around 1:38 PM local time, the aircraft took off, and after barely climbing 625 feet, it started to descend uncontrollably. Almost immediately after departure, a distress call was placed. The plane was flying abnormally low, according to witnesses in the Meghani Nagar neighborhood, which is only a few kilometers from the airport. Videos of the plane fighting to gain altitude have been making the rounds online. The jet struck the boys' dorm building at B.J. Medical College within a minute of takeoff, causing a huge explosion and fire that spread to nearby buildings.

There are no known survivors, according to authorities. Over 240 people are thought to have died, including crew members and passengers. Many of the at least 204 victims that have been recovered are still strapped into their seats, suggesting that the impact was abrupt and forceful. Given that the collision happened in a residential area with a high population density, several people on the ground are also thought to be among the dead. Rescue efforts are ongoing despite difficult conditions, and hospitals throughout Ahmedabad are overflowing with remains and injured onlookers. The disaster was handled quickly by the Indian government. Deeply saddened by the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described it as "heart-breaking beyond words." Ram Mohan Naidu, the minister of civil aviation, was sent right away to Ahmedabad to supervise the rescue and investigation activities there. Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, also paid a visit to the spot and assured the impacted families of his entire support. Helplines were set up in the interim to support the relatives and families of those on board. Leaders around the world offered their sympathies. In addition to offering assistance to their families, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer recognized the death of more than fifty British citizens aboard the flight. Queen Camilla and King Charles III also conveyed their sadness. Russian President Vladimir Putin was among the other foreign leaders who sent condolence and support greetings. Because the passengers were foreign, the tragedy has not only rocked India but has had an impact on people all around the world.

The relatively new Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, registered VT-ANB and delivered in 2024, was the aircraft involved in the collision. This tragedy is even more startling because the 787 series has up to now had an excellent safety record. A thorough inquiry has been started by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Indian Aircraft Accident inquiry Bureau (AAIB). Boeing has pledged complete cooperation as well. To ascertain the cause of the disaster, investigators will analyze the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder that were discovered late in the evening. Although the cause of the crash is still unknown, preliminary assessments indicate that a catastrophic mechanical failure soon after takeoff may have been the cause. The huge fuel load needed for a long-haul flight to London probably increased the fire's and the explosion's severity when it hit the ground.

This occurrence brings to mind other aviation tragedies in India, like the 2010 Mangalore catastrophe and the 2020 Kozhikode Air India Express crash. It is a clear reminder of how crucial ongoing attention to air safety and infrastructure improvements is. According to aviation experts, the investigation's conclusions may lead to a reexamination of Dreamliner operations and Air India's fleet maintenance procedures. Vigils have already been conducted in a number of places, particularly Ahmedabad and London, as part of the public mourning process. Celebrities, such as Bollywood actors Vicky Kaushal, Janhvi Kapoor, and R. Madhavan, expressed their sorrow on social media, calling the incident "devastating." Counseling services have been made available to traumatized residents and the families of the victims, and communities all around the world are coming together in solidarity. In addition to being a terrible accident, the downing of Air India Flight AI 171 has caused national pain, left hundreds of families in mourning, and sparked serious concerns about aviation safety in one of the fastest-growing air travel markets in the world. Now that the world is watching, attention is shifting to accountability, healing, and making sure that a disaster like this never occurs again.
