Unexpected Twist

Part Two: An awakening

By Olivia BarryPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Now I’m sixteen years old and have been locked up in my room for thirteen whole years. I’ve only ever been outside of my room to be homeschooled. I really hate that I can’t even go out for a bit of fresh air, instead I’m expressing my feelings through a flipping notebook. Anyway, I should probably start from the beginning.

Two months ago I became so fed up with my dads behaviour towards my power that I tried to think of a way to get back at him. I was sick of the way he spoke to me, it was as ifi had his name written on my arm to show I was his property. After yet another argument with him, I stormed off to my room in a huff until I realised that if I was quite enough I may be able to run off unnoticed.

I shimmied through the crack in the door and tiptoed across the floor to the front door. As I got closer I could feel the excitement coursing through my veins. I decided that I wanted to do so many things so I grabbed as much money as I could find out of mine and my dads savings and gently seized the door open. “Bye dad, see you soon.” I whispered it so quietly that I could barely hear myself.

I ran down the corridors so fast that you would think I was trying to win a marathon. Swiftly, I bolted through crowds of citizens so happy that I had achieved freedom, I forgot where I was going to go. As my pace slowed I saw a big building labelled “High School” it was closed because of the time of day. Even though I shouldn’t have, I climbed through one of the open windows around the back and wandered aimlessly inside.

A small closet labelled janitors looked empty and the door was dusty as if no one had touched it in years. A small smile took over my face as I walked in and saw multiple blankets that I could use as a pillow. I was so exhausted from running I set up a small throne of blankets and fell asleep as soon as I led on them.

The next morning I awoke to the sound of teenagers voices and a surprisingly loud bell. I panicked in case anyone found me but then noticed all of the voices were slowly disappearing. A sigh of relief escaped from my lips as I sunk back down onto the blankets. Over the next few minutes an exasperated voice arose in the hallways of the school. “No no no NO!” Even though they sounded frustrated I still felt at ease when I heard them speaking.

Suddenly, a teenager with electric blue eyes and dark brown hair swung open the door to reveal me sat there amongst dusty blankets. By the look on his face I could tell this wasn’t going to end well. He proved me wrong though as he reached out a hand to pull me up. “Uh hi I’m Alice.” I spoke with little confidence but immediately felt the urge to grin as he smile at me. “Hi why-wha- why are you in there?” “Well you see I umm, can’t go home right now cause my dad is overly protective and won’t let me go outside for ... complicated reasons.” He stared at me for a minute or two until, “ I’ve never seen you here, so you don’t go here. You just wanted to get away from .. your dad and explore outside of your home?”

He gave me a complex look as I nodded my head. We talked about a few different things until he looked at the time and said he had to rush off.

I decided to follow him to see what he was up to. As I almost gave up hope I saw him bound down an alley and I crept behind him. I saw a man stood next to him shouting in his face, I could only catch a glimpse of their conversation “ Why isn’t she ... I’ve tried to make an exception... FIX IT!” I hid behind a couple of bins and gasped in amazement at the man. He had a mask in his hand and when I looked closer I could see two bright red eyes staring into the dark. I edged closer to get a better look but as I did the thin piece of wood I was standing on snapped into two and I froze out of fear. Two sets of blood reds eyes came floating over to where I was crouched. I stood up and bolted out of the alley as fast as I could, trying to think of somewhere to hide!
