What's your name? What's your sign" The age-old question, the corniest pickup line. Most would turn their heads and move on to the next guy at the bar. Personally, this is one of the most interesting questions that can be asked in my opinion. The endless thoughts when someone says "I'm a Pieces" or "I'm on the cusp of Gemini and Cancer" or "I'm a Scorpio with a Taurus moon," can materialize hours of conversational topics.

Being someone that has a constant horoscope tab pulled up on their computer and that person who has the book The Secret Language of Birthdays by Gary Goldschneider ready at their fingertips, it's safe to say astrology has played an integral role in my life. Possessing the mark of a Scorpio makes this topic even more fun to investigate.

We are the ones with the worst reputation. We are described as sex-crazed, melodramatic, and manipulative. People wince when they hear "I'm a Scorpio" like we're the villains of the zodiac family. However, most are unaware that the Scorpio sign can evolve. It is the only sign in the zodiac that has 3 phases to its star sign. First, the scorpion with its deadly singer. Next, the eagle which can bring about self-awareness, and finally the phoenix the pinnacle of the animal totems. All 3 phases are important to a Scorpio's life and many do not have the chance to evolve, hence the poor reputation with so many relying on their intimidating deadly stinger to get their way.

Proudly wearing the badge of an overly confident, hopefully somewhat evolved Scorpio, diving into life headfirst is a true mark of the star sign. Being called "mean" or "devious" are only words and truly nothing can keep us down except our own self-destructive tendencies. We probably coined the term "you are your biggest enemy." So it is vital as a Scorpio to look internally and evolve or you may fall victim to your own cunning ways.

Being ruled by the element of water our deep passion and emotional power can be intense. Think of a strong ocean tide, that's the intensity of a Scorpio's emotional grasp, be careful or it may bring you out to sea. Our intuition is eerily spot on and our loyalty can be fierce. While identifying with this sun sign and feeling very close to these intense emotions and internal power struggle, there is another force at play, the moon.

When a person is born there are 3 things that matter greatly. The location, the time, and the date. These factors act like coordinates on a map and pinpoint exactly how the stars were aligned when you entered this world. If you were born in Tulum, Mexico on April 16th, 1990 at 4:00 pm your sun sign would be considered Aries, but you'd need to do a little more digging to find out what sign governs your moon. As for myself, the polarity to Scorpio is Taurus, they are exactly opposite on the zodiac calendar, and typically do not get along. Taurus rules my moon and rather than struggle with this inevitable polarity, the best way to put it is, I am my own yin to my yang.

We are not all bad, some of us have gooey centers like myself, perfectly balanced moon signs that can help take our edge off. Some more evolved Scorpios know to only portray a deadly predator when needed. So next time you're in a conversation about astrology, remember there are many elements at play, but be careful, "where, when, and exactly what time were you born" may not be the best new pickup line.
