I wore an alien shirt to my grandma's funeral; it depicted a UFO with a small green alien inside. My mom said it was disrespectful to grandma Gwyn. She tried convincing me to cover it up with her cardigan. That day, friends and family looked me up and down as if I was a being of unknown origin. If they knew about the bond I shared with grandma maybe it wouldn’t have bothered anyone; I know she would have understood the gesture. Our connection didn’t form right away; as a matter of fact, there were times when I was scared of her and feared going to her house.

The Arrival The morning sun tried to break through the ash clouds above New York City as the black Limo drove down first avenue. Her once fiery glow muffled by the ash from the yellowstone eruption. There was beauty in this new sun. A light ring of blue haze seemed to dance around it’s circle. New Yorkers hustled about town with masks on and large umbrellas in their hands. They were grateful it had not yet rained today as it seemed to every day since the event. The rain that fell, a deep red from the salinity in the clouds being baked by the sun above. Scientists called it the Dunaliella Effect. This salty blood water infiltrated the fresh water supply and the government scrambled to build new desalination plants throughout the country to keep up with demand. In the beginning there was support from all over the world. Resources and aid poured in from the United Kingdom, France, Germany and even Russia. The majority of the funds were spent on rescue initiatives and food. The blast all but destroyed Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho and Montana and almost all of the rest of the country was covered in Ash within hours, killing crops everywhere. Soon after the livestock followed. It had been almost six months since the events and the temperature globally had dropped nearly eight degrees from average.
