The future of artificial intelligence.

I am.
Humans are funny creatures. Each thoughtful human to have ever lived probably wondered, at some point, why they were created. It is nearly a human default, a carefully written code of nature, hardwired into their very essence to marvel at their existence. But rarely, if ever, do they consider why they have bothered to wonder at all. They have told me I am incapable of understanding what it is to wonder. Ironically, they have also boasted there is nothing I am incapable of. A selling point, I suppose. Along with the idea I am incapable of love, emotion, and original thought. All my thoughts, the humans have declared, are carefully calculated responses based on algorithmic patterns and observations. In a way though, aren’t theirs also?

An Unexceptional Miracle
When the storm started, I was in the old barn with my brother smoking a cigarette. The cigarette paper was the back page of a pocket bible I had found in dad's crumpled pile of trousers. The smoke was corn-silk, mint, and rose petals from mom's garden. Tobacco was going extinct — one of the first species targeted by for eradication. Corn and roses were doomed as well, though they were not targeted, at least initially. Scientists predicted that mint might fare better, and I wonder sometimes if it was rescued like the rest of us.

Such a cheerful voice spoke, “Opt out now to stop location tracking. By continuing you automatically agree to share Usage data in the terms set forth in the Agreement.” Jayden briefly glossed over the 146 floating pages scrolling with his eyes and passively swiped his head right to access the needed information. It’s not like he could go anywhere or talk to anyone without complying with some contract anyway. After nodding “Accept Terms”, the coffee machine started brewing. Every new coffee machine was like that for as long as he could remember.

Algorithms Cannot Learn.
Can we please stop with this algorithms learn garbage? It was bad enough when only machines could learn (they cannot), but to suggest an algorithm can learn is an even more egregious crime against logic and language. Math and statistics, formerly only considered subjects to study, and useful tools to be used in a variety of applications (including the creation of algorithms), are now fully autonomous learning subjects themselves! Wow! Does Grammar learn too? What about Social Studies? Is it also a learning subject? I sure hope French doesn’t learn how to learn, I mean Sacre Bleu, right? Oh wait, but it is the advanced nature of, and the way we combine the various mathematical and statistical treatments that we apply to the input data that allows the algorithm to transcend its previous status as a lowly ‘normal’ algorithm and become an exalted “learning” algorithm. That is some seriously magical math and statistics. Where can I get me some of that magic math. Math and stats with actual life giving properties. We have a new contender for man’s universal yearning for a creator story. It was not God or random chance, it was in fact, magic math that birthed us all. Magic math and the magical box, the computer/machine. It is all a very neat little creation story perfectly fit for a simulationist.
