Unicorns Exist!
I'm looking up at my mom, who's telling the tale of when our kind roamed around with the Humans. She tells about how we used to help the Humans with tasks and they would give us shelter from the rain and the cold winters. It's a story of marvels, until she gets to the part where they start hunting us for our magic, which they cannot take from us to use for themselves. She goes on to tell of the times she heard fellow Unicorns in the distance scream in pain as the Humans took their horns and cut their manes, trying to take our magic; but, they don't understanding our magic and how it works. No one ever came back. She says that we no longer show ourselves to the Humans so that our kind is protected.

Black With White Pinpricks
It’s morning and the lights cycle on with that humming sound you only notice when it’s just started. I sit up and blink and rub my face with my fingertips. My skin growls over the ridges of my skull as it moves. It’s not unpleasant. Wake up, feel something.

1954 WURLITZER JUKEBOX, POOR CONDITION, DOESN’T WORK, WEATHER DAMAGE - ASKING $5K Marcus attached three photos of the jukebox and hit SEND. He placed the phone in his pocket and immediately wished he hadn’t. Now he was stuck with the hillbilly owner while they waited for his assistant’s response. The two men shifted their footing. The sunlight streamed through the barn slats at a lazy angle, and in that light turned slow motes of dust. Those sunny specks mocked Marcus, mimicking the time that was slowly passing as he waited for the hillbilly to awkwardly force some conversation.

Quarantine
We had passed the three month mark and E. Coli was pronounced dead. There were the usual celebrations and stories. People posted about the time they got sick with it, how miserable it was. A remembrance was held for all of those it had killed throughout history (mostly just the elderly and infants, as usual).

It Doesn't Matter What Star It Is
It was the holiday office party at Heaven, Inc. and of its 112 attendees, David was the only one that was awake. His feet were up on the monitor table as he unscrewed his flask and took a pull. He held the flask out to the room of cots where his coworkers lay connected to wires and different sorts of tubes. “Anyone? Anyone? No? Huh. More for me, fuckos.” He cackled. The gummy gleam of his SECURITY badge winked light across the wall as he swung his arm back.

Everyone Here Knows Me
The plane took off and climbed into the sky. Alice Stockwell shifted in her seat. Was everyone looking at her? It felt like everyone was looking at her. Not too much, but every now and then someone would look up at her and smile. She guessed that it was strange to see a kid flying alone, but she wasn’t used to being stared at. It made her uncomfortable. The air was very stuffy in here.

The Man with the Box Tattoo. Second Place in Body Art Challenge. Top Story - October 2020.
A portal exists on my left arm. Simple lines of ink bearing the bends that a canvas made of skin dictates, forms a cube open at one end. When the world around me consumes my will, when this reality pumped by a beating heart and rhythmic breaths misses a beat and grips my throat, I turn to the box on my arm.
