Prologue

Before the apocalypse my mother gave me her heart shaped locket, that had been passed down the generations. I never really understood what was so special about this locket until the post-apocalypse. It happened all at once, the end of the world. It all started with war! War between all the countries there were bombs and nuclear explosions. We were killing each other. So a few select people who were against the wars, were chosen to go to the island and stay there until the war was over. That island would be a safe-haven till the war was over, just over 30 people were sent to the island with pets and animals. But, somehow the location was compromised and people came to the island and killed everyone on it. A few people hid and were able to survive. My mother was killed. I was one of the few people who lived.

Dear diary,

Hi, my name is Kelly. Before the apocalypse my mother and I lived together in Bonanza, Colorado. It was a small town where I grew up my entire life. I was born on November 13, 2021. I was 13 years old when the war started, and when she gave me her locket. The war has ended and there are no more explosions or bombs. No one has tried to contact me on the island. I am running out of supplies. So I am going to leave the island and get more food and water. I am out looking for a boat to the mainland. I haven’t seen anyone since the attack on the island. If there is someone on the island I hope that I don’t run into them before I leave. I just hope none of those men are here on the island. I have had to learn how to move through the island silently so I am not attacked by anybody who is here.

Dear Dairy,

I made it off the island and am on the mainland. I am not exactly sure where I am though. Before my mother died she told me not to trust anyone because there are still bad people on the earth. So I am going to keep sneaking around till I get the supplies. Everything here is either blown up or burnt down. There is no sign of human life. Actually there is no sign of anything living. There is no food or supplies either. That means I am going to have to go farther inland.

October 2, 2035

Dear dairy,

I have not found a good supply of food so far. I have only found enough for a day or two so I have to keep going inland. So far I have not run into any one but I did hear shouts a few days back. So I ran away from where I heard it. Ever since then I feel like something is following me. Every once in a while I hear the rustling of trash and something breathing when I take off running. I don’t know what has been following me but I am not going to let it catch up to me. Knowing that I have my mothers locket on, makes me feel safer.

October 5, 2035

Dear diary,

Well I found out what has been following me, it is a dog. Since it has been following me for a while I decided that I might as well keep him . It is a male Shih-Tzu with white and creamy colors. I named him Chuckles because he made me happy and less lonely. When he found me he was skinny so I gave him part of my rations.

October 14, 2035

Dear Diary,

Chuckles is now getting healthy weight wise. He is the sweetest love bug there is. We play tug of war once a day with a piece of cloth I found in the street. I don’t have to worry about him falling behind because he would follow me to the ends of the earth. I just happened to find another 2 days worth of food thanks to Chuckles, he has a good nose. He is kind of a picky eater but loves any meat that he might find, which rarely happens. Beside meat he likes apples, bread, and beans. With chuckles I didn’t have to worry about any people finding us. If a person is around 10 miles away he alerts me, and we start to move on.

October 23, 2035

Dear Diary,

We started off because Chuckles alerted that someone was nearby. We made it about a mile and Chuckles no longer smelt someone nearby so we decided to rest. When I sat down, I flew up in the air. I must have tripped a wire because I was hanging in a net. Chuckles immediately went into action and started chewing on the rope. Once he had it almost chewed through, I bounced up and let myself fall down and the rope snapped and I fell to the ground. Chuckles licked me all over, he got extra food that night.

October 31, 2035

Dear Diary,

I still do not have enough food to go back to the island. I have decided that I am going to stay inland since I can’t find a good food supply. So Chuckles and I are going to keep moving farther inland. The other day I found a sleeping bag that we sleep on together. My birthday is coming up in about two weeks. We found some brownies and dog treats the other day. So we ate them for dessert. This is the first time I have had a brownie in almost half a year.

Dear Diary,

We wandered upon a hotel the other day so we went inside, and found 3 days worth of food. So I decided that we should stay there that night and leave that morning. We ate and then slept in a bed. Chuckles loved laying on a bed. It was probably the first time he laid on a bed. The next morning chuckles woke me up alerting me that someone was on the perimeter. So I jumped up, packed the food and took some clothes, and a blanket. We made it out of the hotel just in time, as we were exiting the hotel someone was rounding the corner.

November 13, 2035

Dear Diary,

Today is my birthday, and I am turning 14. Last year before the war My mother and I both would go out to eat, then go shopping. We had so much fun, whenever I open my locket and I see my mother then I feel safe. This year Chuckles and I went to a clothes shop that took forever to find and went shopping. Then I got a dog toy for chuckles and a dog bed. That was the first time in almost a year I had so much fun. We left there and headed to the woods to eat some food. That night when I look at my locket I notice that the picture of my mother is bent in one corner so I lift it up and a slip of paper falls out. I look at it and it says go to Socotra Island. That I will be safe there. Tomorrow Chuckles and I are heading to Socotra Island wherever that is.

November 16 2035

Dear Diary,

I found a gas station and got a map. I found out that I am in Africa and the Island my mother wrote about is off the coast of Tohen. All I gotta do is find a boat and sail to Socotra Island. I hope Chuckles is not afraid of water. At the gas station I got food and extra gas to last 6 days on the water. Along with blankets and clothes. Once I am on the island I am hoping that there will be food and more supplies. My mother said it would be safe there.

November 20, 2035

Dear Diary,

Chuckles and I made it to the coast of Tohen, from there we found a boat. After getting more supplies, Chuckles and I slept that night in a motel and took a shower. The next morning we packed the boat and took off. Turns out Chuckles was scared of the motor at first but after a while he got used to it. Soon I would be where my mother wanted me to be.
