From Closet Confusion to Confidence: How Gen Z is Dressing Better with a Little Help from AI

Okay, so it’s 2025, and honestly? Fashion is just... different now. Like, really different. Gone are the days of flipping through fashion mags or waiting for Vogue to tell us what’s hot next season. Gen Z handed that old-school stuff over to someone (or something?) new—and faster. Yep, I’m talking about AI. Specifically, ChatGPT.

I know, sounds kinda weird, right? Like, “You’re telling me a chatbot helps you get dressed?” But hang on—it’s actually way smarter than it sounds. And once you try it, you kinda get hooked.

So, quick story. A few weeks ago, I had this rooftop engagement party to go to. Super cute event, but the dress code was that annoying “casual-chic” thing. What does that even mean, anyway? I stood there staring into my closet like it was gonna answer me back. I tried on half my wardrobe and still felt like nothing hit right. Then I remembered a video I saw on TikTok—someone used ChatGPT to plan their outfit. I figured, why not?

My Closet Has a Digital Assistant Now

I typed in something like, “Hey, need help finding a casual-chic outfit for an engagement party in NYC. It’s probably gonna be a bit chilly. I’m 24, more streetwear than girly.” And literally, in seconds, it came back with black wide-leg trousers, a cropped knit sweater, silver hoops, white platform sneakers. I tossed on a trench coat and boom—done. And no joke, I got compliments all night long. Like, actual people asking where I got stuff.

That’s when it hit me—this isn’t just a neat little trick. It’s actually changing the game. Gen Z doesn’t just use tech, we live in it. So when AI showed up, we didn’t push back. We just kinda said, “Cool, let’s make this work for us.”

The thing is, we don’t care about being trendy just for the sake of it. What we want is to feel like our actual selves when we step outside. ChatGPT helps with that. Some of my friends use it to build capsule wardrobes—y’know, like outfits that all mix and match so they don’t keep buying stuff they don’t need. Others are using it to explore gender-neutral looks or modest fashion without all the awkward Google searches or judgement.

What’s wild is how personal it can get. I once typed, “I’m not loving how my arms look lately—can you help me find something summery but with sleeves?” And instead of giving me a pep talk (which I wasn’t really in the mood for), it just gave me stylish options that made me feel good. No fuss, no drama.

And another cool part? It asks questions back. It’s not like scrolling through Pinterest and thinking, “Okay but would this actually look good on me?” ChatGPT will be like, “What kind of fit do you usually wear? Cropped or oversized? What colors are you into lately?” It’s like having that super stylish friend who just gets you—minus the judgment if you’re having an off day.

It’s also made fashion way more accessible. You don’t have to be rich or follow fashion week religiously. You just need to know what you like. Or even just what you don’t like. The AI helps you figure the rest out.

Sure, we still follow influencers and shop trends when we want. That stuff’s not going anywhere. But now there’s space for people who never felt seen in fashion before. Whether you’re broke, curvy, in-between sizes, nonbinary, whatever—this tool doesn’t care. It’s just trying to help you find clothes that make you feel you.

I’ve even noticed myself experimenting more. Like, trying colors I used to avoid or wearing stuff I wouldn’t normally pick. Because now, I can bounce ideas off something that won’t laugh or say, “Uhh... maybe not that.” It’s oddly freeing, actually.

So, yeah. In 2025, Gen Z isn’t just using ChatGPT to cheat on homework or draft texts to our crushes. We’re literally using it to figure out how we want to walk through the world. Not just dressed up, but feeling like the most us version of ourselves.
