This is Interesting story of blind woman named Gail Lane, who lost her vision a decade ago, She underwent the first stage of this extraordinary surgery at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital in Vancouver in late February.

On February 28, 2025, the surgery was performed for the first time in Canada at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital in Vancouver. Dr. Greg Moloney, an ophthalmologist and surgeon, led the initiative and has performed seven successful surgeries in Australia before coming to Canada

The operation, as detailed in a Facebook post by the hospital, involves extracting a patient’s tooth, typically the canine, embedding a plastic optical lens within it, and then implanting the entire structure into the eye, according to CBC.

“It is a rare operation that most people have not heard of, even if you are an eye surgeon,” Dr Greg Moloney, an ophthalmologist and surgeon at the hospital, told the CBC.

Dr. Greg Moloney, an ophthalmologist and surgeon at the hospital, shared with CBC that this is a rare operation unfamiliar even to many eye surgeons.

In the initial stage of the procedure, the medical team extracted one of Lane’s teeth, shaped it into a rectangular form, drilled a hole, and inserted a plastic optical lens inside it. This modified tooth was then placed in Lane’s cheek, where it will remain for about three months. After this period, the doctors will retrieve the tooth from her cheek and implant it into the front of her eye, underneath the cheek tissue. This complex process will result in a pink-colored eye with a small black circle through which Lane will be able to see. Given the intricacies of the surgery, it will be performed on only one eye, the CBC reported.

Speaking with CTV News, Lane expressed her hope and excitement about the possibility of regaining her sight. “I haven’t seen myself for 10 years. If I’m fortunate enough to get some sight back, there will be wonderful things to see,” she said.

In this remarkable medical journey, Lane stands as a testament to human resilience and the possibilities of medical innovation.

Tooth in eye surgery, also known as osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP), is a medical procedure used to restore vision in severe cases of corneal and ocular surface patients.

The surgery involves removing a tooth from the patient or a donor, cutting a longitudinal lamina from the tooth, and drilling a hole perpendicular to the lamina to fit a cylindrical lens.

The lamina is then grown in the patient's cheek for several months before being implanted onto the eye.

this is a real and fascinating medical procedure called osteoodontokeratoprosthesis (OOKP). It involves implanting a tooth in the eye to help restore vision for patients with severe corneal damage.

How Does It Work?

Tooth Selection – A tooth (usually a canine) is removed from the patient and reshaped to hold a tiny optical lens.

Implantation in Cheek – The modified tooth-lens combination is implanted into the patient’s cheek to allow it to develop a blood supply.

Placement in the Eye – After a few months, the structure is removed and implanted into the eye, replacing the damaged cornea.

This procedure is typically used for patients whose corneas are too damaged for traditional transplants, such as those with severe burns, autoimmune diseases, or chemical injuries.

A similar case involved a British woman who had her sight restored after losing it for over a decade. The procedure is rare but has been successful in restoring vision for patients who had no other options.

Despite its complexity and the potential for complications, tooth-in-eye surgery can provide a long-term solution for patients with severe corneal issues and can significantly improve their quality of life by restoring vision.
