Beautifully Blended

I was Born on the Cusp

By Dionne HawkinsPublished 5 years ago 4 min read

Born between August 23rd and September 22nd, the Virgo is an Earth sign represented by the maiden or virgin. In Greek and Roman mythology, the Virgo constellation is related to Demeter, the goddess of the harvest, or Parthenos’ myth, the Greek word for virgin.

The Virgo is known to be creative, kind, hardworking, reliable, patient, well-grounded people. I find this to be true for myself as these positive words describe me in my mid-year evaluation. My supervisor also stated that I was organized, observant, and a problem solver. Educators should be exhibit the qualities, and I believe they are helping me build positive and lasting relationships with my students and their families. More positive indicators that I embody the true nature of a Virgo. We make great employees, loyal friends, and supportive lovers because of these traits.

Yes, Virgos sound remarkable until you encounter our adverse personality traits. We tend to be critical, perfectionist, overthinking, stubborn, uptight, and picky. These traits go hand in hand with our positive characteristics. As analytical, observant problem solvers, Virgos will get the job done because we overthink things and try to imagine every possible outcome, their rewards, and consequences. We seek to do everything efficiently and effectively, which works in my favor as an educator.

Due to our hard-working nature and our high standards, Virgos can be overly critical of others. In myself, I find this to be the complete opposite. I tend to be more forgiving of people and give them more grace than I give to myself. If you are reading this, you’ll realize my creative outlet is writing but what you don’t know is I will have rewritten this several times before I publish this to this Vocal. If I post this more than a day before the deadline, this will be a major miracle. Yeah, I tend to be critical of my work and overthink my word choices to get my point across. I would continue to criticize my work even if it received rave reviews.

Although I am very well organized on my job and my lesson plans are what my supervisor calls perfect and exemplary, my home is not the same. I do not subscribe to the adage “A place for everything and everything in its place.” My house is clean, but you can tell it’s lived in by an educator. Most Virgos I know have immaculate dwellings for the most part. The only rooms that are disheveled are the teenager’s rooms.

But, am I a true Virgo, or do I encompass the Libra traits, who are born between September 23rd and October 22nd. If I had been born four days later, I would have been a Libra. Some days I do think I act more like the Libra than a Virgo. According to Tarot.com, Those born between September 19th(my birthday) and September 25th are born on the

Virgo and are a beautiful balance of the two signs.

Libra is an air sign who enjoys being around a lot of people and are known extroverts. They tend to be well-balanced and are represented by scales. True Libras are also known to be equally as self-indulgent as they are generous.

The positive traits of the Libra I tend to relate to most are their willingness to be fair and diplomatic. When I was a general education teacher, I approached classroom management as fair and diplomatic. I allowed my students to develop some of the class rules, procedures, rewards, and consequences. When the students have a say in the way the classroom operates, they tend to buy into the class, and there are fewer behavior issues. I am neither extroverted nor well-balanced. I enjoy others’ company, but I also need my alone time to center myself as any Virgo does. Hmmm, I do balance spending time with others and rejuvenation through alone time.

I also try to be fair and diplomatic with the adults in my life because I don’t like confrontation. I usually confront people as a last resort—a negative Libra trait I exhibit, being nonconfrontational, which I don’t see negatively. I would instead call it being a peacemaker, and this is an excellent trait to have. Most people don’t like confrontations but will use it as a weapon in their arsenal.

Another negative Libra trait I tend to have is being indecisive, which can be a byproduct of overthinking things and situations. Once I have decided, though, the Virgo in me takes control, and I will give my decision 1000 percent of my energy to make it work. Because of my stubbornness, it may take me a while to determine my decision isn’t working, and I need to alter my course. To figure out my course of action.

Finally, I may be more of a Libra than a Virgo as I can wallow in self-pity when things are not going my way. I can be a bit self-absorbed, so when things don't go perfectly for me, I feel the world is ending. I have trouble seeing the bigger picture in times of strife and instead focus on myself exclusively. Once I transition out of self-pity, I look for solutions to the problem.

As you can see, I am a Virgo with strong Libra tendencies. In my opinion, I am almost equal parts Virgo and Libra. It has been rare, but people who strongly believe in the astrological signs and their traits will mistake me for a Libra at first glance. However, once you get to know me and my real personality, the Virgo comes shining through without any doubts. I am a beautifully blended woman born on the Virgo-Libra Cusp. I am a generous, kind soul who believes in equality and justice for all. You can say this is one of the main reasons I became an educator. I wanted to change the world for future generations. But first, I must loosen my grip on perfectionism, stop overthinking and just let my grounded, graceful, and persuasive self shine in the world.
