Youth's Dreams in Old Times

Drabble inspired by an old photo

University of Illinois dorm life, circa 1909

"Where do you see yourself a couple of years after we graduate?"

"Well, my father wants me to join his law firm and take it over, eventually."

"I see. But what about you? What do YOU want?"

"I don't know, maybe the same. Also get married, have kids. Why all these questions?"

"Just curious. My father also wants me to continue his business. I, on the other hand, want to travel and see the world... Maybe write about it."

"Oh, that sounds interesting. Can I come with?"

"Sure, why not? It definitely will be easier, with your French and Spanish."

100 words make a Drabble

I tried to imagine this deeply philosophical conversation just by looking at the old picture above. Could these young men imagine that within their life time two brutal world wars would unfold? I wonder how they were affected by them. Also, I am always struck by how much older young people look in the old pictures compared to the contemporary youth. These two fine lads are probably around 20 but they look like today's 40-year-olds.

What stories would this picture tell you?

Such a cool photo and source of inspiration! I love the casual ease in the conversation!

  • They tell me something Dickensian. Like "Jolly good, old chap, could I come with you since life needs a pop?"

It tells me that college dorms got much more radical and still remained the same!

  • Nice work . Please check my stories out as well if you get a chance.

  • I think their hairstyles and the high neck collars with the bowties, make them appear older than they are. But if you look at their faces, they do look pretty young, maybe a little chubby-ish, but young. “How about the big dance tonight?”

  • Nice work . Please check my stories out as well if you get a chance.

They do look like a couple of college boys sitting around talking of the future, lol
