"You never forget your first, do you?"
"Huh?" Ellis asked, stroking his chin and glancing at his dapper, dark-haired associate as they sat silently enjoying their lunch break.
"You never forget your first. Who was yours?"
"Ah, yes. That's true. My first was a girl named Samantha. She was about twenty-five, and I was twenty-one. A late bloomer is what you'd call me, I guess. How about you, Davide?"
"Ha-ha, late bloomer indeed, my friend. No shame in that thought." Davide let out an intense, grating laugh, and Ellis nervously joined in.
"My first was a particularly feisty old man named Don. He was about seventy-two."
"That old? You've always been a bit of a dark horse, though, Davide." Ellis smirked. He sipped his raspberry tea and took a bite of the soft, crumbly ginger cake the lady in the office kitchen baked every month.
"I was warned about you when I joined," he added.
Davide smirked in response and shrugged a little. His face creased slightly at the "dark horse" comment. He sipped from his double shot of the finest Black Ethiopian coffee—the same order he got every single break, the one he swore was the best coffee money could buy—and gave a small, wordless nod.
"It had little to do with his age or that he was a man," Davide said with finality. "I saw his bounty poster. I needed the money fast. What's that saying? Necessity is the mother of invention, right?"
Ellis returned a chuckle and a silent nod.
"My latest target is a guy called Mandrake. Philliposious Mandrake. Who the hell comes up with these names?" Davide scratched his head a little, then shrugged.
A cool ten million was the only reason he needed not to give Mandrake too much consideration.
"Mine is... never mind, " Ellis trailed off without revealing the identity of his latest target.
"Probably best to keep that one a secret. He is a bit of a dark horse," snarked Davide as he stepped up and headed out of the break room.
"I'd be very careful approaching him."

Hahaha I love this Paul! I started to realise a bit later than I care to admit!
For some reason, I don't think Ellis is a friend...
Ha! Reminiscing about your first kill definitely sounds like break room chat!! I always tell people I'm an assassin when they ask what I do! Great story Paul.
The body count that actually matters 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Loved your story!
I'd be careful, too, lol.
Love this! I definitely thought they were talking about something else in the beginning!
Loved the take on that phrase. You've got real skill when it comes to tone! The gradual building of tension was perfect too. Loved this!
A really good and twisting micro story!
I knew they weren't talking about sex!
Oh, nicely played! Very cleverly done, Paul! Definitely wanted more of the story! Very interesting scene of of bounty hunting going corporate!
