The wind whispered through empty trees like a warning. Winter was vengeful. Townsfolk became ill. Livestock froze. Crops died. Men became desperate. Anything that threatened survival was cast out; children included.

Some would soften their guilt with stories of Beira. Claiming the children and animals were sacrifices to her. They say she was turned against and cast out as a child 300 years ago for making snow flurries when excited. The girl was said to have froze to death.

They knew nothing. Taking a breath I blew out a frosty air. It was too warm.
