Gail was sitting home alone, reading a book. It was late at night, and her parents were still at a dinner party thrown by the dowager widow Belk. She usually enjoyed staying home alone, but tonight was different. There was no moon or stars out tonight; clouds covered them. All the servants had gone home already and left her home completely alone. To top it off, she had just started the latest Edgar Allen Poe book.
Thump.
What was that, she wondered, half jumping from her seat.
Thump.
There it was again. What could it be?
Thump.
Gail would have gotten up to run to her room to hide under the covers, but she would have to run past whatever was making the thumping noise in the hallway. She just didn’t dare to stand up.
Thump. Thump.
The noise was getting closer. Getting up and looking around, Gail wondered if she had enough time to hide in the library before whatever it was came in and got her.
Thump. Thump.
Thump.
Whatever it was, it was at the doorway to the library, and it was tremendous from the sound of it. Gail was freaking out. She froze like a deer in headlights, too scared to move. Why did the old dowager widow have to have a dinner party tonight? Why did Gail decide to read Poe’s work tonight of all nights?
Thump.
Suddenly, a dark shadow darted into the room and shot straight for Gail. Gail screamed at the top of her lungs as her black cat, Galoshes, barreled into her arms and demanded her attention.
Gail should have known the cat was inside the house.
Suddenly, the cat hissed loudly. Right behind Gail, she heard a real loud…
Thump.

Omgggg you got me good! I really thought it was Galoshes making that thump sound though I did wonder how. But now I know it wasn't him. So what was it! So creepy! Loved your story!
