He awoke in a different place. The sounds, the light, the smells were far different from when he went to sleep last night. He looked down at himself, lying on a sidewalk, and tried to remember what happened in the last ten hours.

At the local bar, John tried to get the attention of the pretty lady two seats over. He ordered a pink fruity drink for her, and she smiled at him, thanking him for it. The man sitting between them did not appreciate the gesture, and slugged John in the jaw. That’s the last thing he remembered.

John got up slowly, touching his face where he had been hit. Surprised that it didn’t hurt, he checked for blood or other contusions. None were there. Wearing the same clothes he did last night, he looked around and noticed things he hadn’t seen before. Images of words and sentences floated throughout the air as if tangible. He had trouble reading them, but he could make them out. Jumbles of conversations danced around him, and he turned to follow them as they disappeared soon after they appeared.

He wondered if he hit his head falling last night, but he didn’t remember falling, either. Instead, he just looked at the words trying to figure out what was going on. A couple on the other side of the street crossed over, and he overhead them talking. Those were the words he could now see more clearly. He was viewing their conversations.

Trying to figure out what was going on, he went to see his friend, Abby. Before John could knock on the door, Abby opened it. She looked at him and warmly said, “Welcome to the Fold." She smiled. "Your life is now different. We have much to discuss.”
