They Were Lost, Then They Were Found

For The Vocal Whispering Woods Challenge

They lived on opposite sides of the Earth.

Their lives were humdrum and they became more and more upset each day because love was nowhere to be found.

Work colleagues and friends were not horrible, but they only provided company outside of the home, and it was just the minimum contact, nothing any deeper than that.

They knew they were missing something, and felt that something had been lost or cut away.

Was this going to be the rest of their lives, descending into dark misery? They needed to share their lives, do things with others, laugh, cry, hold someone, and cuddle, but they were always met with rejection.

People always said they would make a great partner for someone else, but who that would be was never clear, in fact, they felt it would be no one.

Sometimes they walked to the beach, each one alone, and looked out over the grey sea, wondering if would be best for everyone if they just kept walking until the sea took them. They always turned round and went home, knowing that tomorrow would be another day at work, followed by a drink afterward then home to a self-made meal, TV, and then bed. That was life.

Eventually, it became too much, and they both decided to walk away, they did not want to die, they were clear about that, but they did not want this life. They packed a rucksack with essentials and then walked out of their homes and into the forest outside of their towns.

The forest was big and many people had gone in and never come out, but they were not frightened, and walking in they felt almost exhilarated. What they did not know was that the moment that they entered their forests they were being watched by old compassionate eyes.

The trees talked:

"Have you seen these two sad souls, they have both walked out on their lives because they can find no one to love them. They both entered their forest at the same time, are you thinking what I'm thinking"

"They are two good people who have been dealt a bad hand by the cards of life. A life without love is not good for anyone, and it is worse when you need it in your life but cannot find it. We could bring them together and see if they can find love with each other. Once in the forest many get lost but many can find what they are looking for. Should we bring them together in a new place and let them work out a new future with each other?"

"I think we should, if we can help two people find love that is a good thing. We have done it before and we will do it again"

The trees wove their Earthly magic and a man and a woman saw each other on the same path deep in a forest in a place far from where they had left.

They were unsure at first but said hello and liked the look of each other, she felt safe and he felt he would love to get to know her. The conversation started to grow and blossom. There were laughs and smiles and smiles and eventually a hug and a kiss. This was something that had never happened to either of them, and each of them wanted more.

The Trees watched on and smiled, their choice had been the right one and they saw the seeds of love growing in the couple.

They left the forest and walked towards a town they had never seen.

Their future awaited them, and they hugged and kissed once more

Reminiscent of "The Forest", but with a benevolent side we didn't get to see in the movie. This would make either a great sequel or at least a response to the horror movie.

  • Awww, the tress played matchmaker! That was so cool! Loved your story!

  • This is great! Were the trees magical? It’s cool they ended up in the same forest together! 😊😇

Love your line: "she felt safe and he felt he would love to get to know her." I also love that your final line has no period. Don't know if that was intentional, but it feels right somehow

I saw two stories in a split screen merge at the end, what a beautiful love story ❤️
