The Walk

Lovely little bit of romance?

The walk there was always something I savoured, trying to make it last longer than the five minutes it usually took.

This was not because I wanted to delay my arrival at the destination at the end of the walk.

I just enjoyed the walk.

The trees swaying in the light breeze, or catching the rain of overcast days, and drip-dropping it over me. I often saw jackdaws and crows; if I didn't see them, I heard them. Sometimes, if I were lucky, a grey squirrel would scramble through the patches of grass beside the path I walked or across the path, stopping me in my tracks.

The walk gave me time to prepare. Time to take stock of who I was, where I was going, and who was waiting for me, and why any of it mattered at all.

The scent of pine, wild grasses, or damp grass blades, petrichor, and the funk of my fragrance, another sensory reminder of her. It had been gifted to me not long after our lives intertwined.

It would be treading overly familiar ground to say she was my whole world.

The beauty to my beast, the storm to my teacup, the Eva to my Hitler. The Medusa to my Perseus—if he gave her freedom, and never slayed her.

Maybe even the Ghislaine to my Jeffrey? History will never forgive us. I'm not sure I do either.

At the epicentre of our love was an exchange of power, of ideas, of need, want, desire, greed, and desecration.

Would love to know who this is…. Ghislaine to my Jeffrey?! Ha! Gulp! (Reminds me of that meme about them - love is finishing each other’s sentences!!)

Now I want to know who, or just what, is waiting for him at the end of his walk. IK you say romance, but I can't help but feel there's more, and creepier more at that

"The Medusa to my Perseus—if he gave her freedom, and never slayed her." It's going to take me a moment to recover from this one. Delightfully dark and intriguing, makes a daring reader crave a bit more!

The honest heartfelt start to this poem sent shivers and me nodding to myself because that is exactly what my walks are like....THEN you twisted to a dark side that had me go backa re read. There is a brilliance in this piece that gave me a whole new type of shiver

The start: beautiful, relatable, a piece truly written with love at the heart. The end: oh my. 😂 Subversive writer indeed, Paul. No idea if it was intentional, but I loved it! Do you recommend using that "Eva to my Hitler" as a pickup line? Lol.

  • I second what Susan said. This was awesomeeee! But hey, if you try again, I'll be here again to read it hehehe

I get that you enjoyed the walk. The descriptions of nature are great. But that comparison involving Ghislaine and Jeffrey is really off. It's inappropriate and doesn't belong in a romantic piece.

  • you really grabbed hold of the attraction of love to all

It’s funny you want to try a romantic micro again because I thought this one was great. But what do I know! I am not a romance reader! :)

I love how eye-catching and edgy this was!! As a good dark romance should be! ;)

  • Romance can be dark. The one night stands of the 70s were dark. Nice shrt romance story.

  • Ah, romance is sometimes overrated! Deliciously dark, Paul.
