Prologue:

In the year 3000, the implants were put in. It was a small little chip not bigger than a quarter that they inserted onto the brain stem at the base of the brain. It was the next logical step in technology, I guess. We already had e-phones, e-pods, e-watches, e-cups, e-TVs, the e-homes etc. Tech had invaded our lives and just like the other things, the implant was a way to make life easier and more sustainable. Honestly, I can still remember the commercials now. “It’s not about you it’s about the environment. ” and “Let’s make life better for others so that living is better for all of us.” To be fair, I got one to cause just like all things that are new it was beautiful and very convenient. For example being able to text without a device or making a call without a phone. More upgrades kept coming every year it was something new to be added to it and then one day it started... the upload.

I had been running since I was 17. I'll never forget that day because it was the day that I had gotten a going away present from my dad. It was the last time I saw him. The present was a golden heart-shaped locket. I had immediately recognized it from pictures this particular Heart-Shaped Locket had been passed down through several generations. Known to be worn by princesses and queens and now it was on my neck, the daughter of the famous tech billionaire, Zach Trivonsky. As he put it around my neck, he apologized and broke down in tears. Back then I thought it was because his only child was leaving, but now I know it was way deeper and far worse than that.

Present Day-> 3028

The upload was going to begin soon in this country and I didn't want to be caught in it so I was packing up my things and moving. The upload started with the 5o states in America, so I moved to Canada, but when it started there I continued moving and it seems as tho wherever I go it follows. "I'd like to pay for a charter to Antartica please." "A charter that far will cost you a pretty penny, young lady can you afford it." Without responding I payed, got my ticket and headed onto the boat. I wanted it to take off as soon as possible, before the people here caught the virus to.

After we took off, I accessed my father's video logs and started to play them back. Video Log # 17: "I didn't mean to. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to." he said like twice before continuing, "Something is wrong with the original test subjects. I don't know how to fix it and I already sent it out to the world in the form of another update." he said right before showing them on the camera. It was almost as though their brains had been short circuited and wasn't working properly anymore. Instead of them controlling the implant, the implant had taken control of them and whatever virus or software glitch this was was spreading and soon the whole globe world would have it. " I myself have already updated so I do not have any time left, I'm giving my daughter the original motherboard chip. It's in her locket behind the photo of her mother. That chip is the key to ending this, I know it is; I just don't know how. Zoey, if you're watching this, I love you and you have to fix this. Even if it means completely frying the other implants. Remember that that chip is connected to everything. I love you." he said with emphasis on everything. All I could think about for the rest of the ride to Antartica was the fact that this was all his fault. He did this to the world and now it was up to me to fix it. I wouldn't even know where to start. So I decided to just shut off my memory stores and take a nap.

'It is connected to everything' the voice in my head said over and over again as I slept. If it is connected to everything, then those other uploads weren't a coincidence. I thought to myself before I woke up. When I opened my eyes the man was just sitting there staring into space. I recognized that empty-look on his face. It's the face everyone had during the upload and after. I had so many questions. Why did their upload start now and why hadn't mine when I was sleeping? When will it start and how do I fix it before it does? Tying his hands behind his back, I took him with me to the abandoned NASA base that I was headed to. I needed to run some test and diagnostics on his implant.

Making a wireless connection with both the motherboard chip and the boat captain's chip, I compared the two. The motherboard chip memory stores were off the charts it was like millions of minds in one. While looking through it, I started to feel drained and slightly emotionless. It was the upload, it had begun. I was now racing against the clock and it was ticking quite fast. If I didn't figure this out it would be the end of the world. We would have lost it all to AI technology.
