The Unknown Being
A short fictional story

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the vast fields as I frantically called out for my missing dog.
"Jasper... Jasper... come on boy... where are you?"
The fields stretched for miles around my small farmhouse. Panic set in as night descended. Desperation fueled my search, and I ventured deeper into the fields than ever before. I knew it wasn't safe but Jasper had survived alongside me and he was now my only friend in this deathly world.
As I stumbled through the tall grass, the air grew colder, and a mysterious mist enveloped my surroundings.
My calls for Jasper echoed through the stillness.
"Jasper..."
As my hope began to wane, a figure materialized before me, seemingly out of thin air. I jumped backward in fright.
The man was tall and cloaked in a swirling mist that shimmered like stardust. His eyes, an otherworldly shade of silver, locked onto me with an intensity that sent shivers down my spine.
I tried to move but I froze with sudden inner shock.
Then he spoke with a voice that seemed to resonate from the depths of the cosmos, calming my racing heart.
"Fear not, Daisy. Your companion is safe," the mysterious man said.
He gestured towards the darkness where Jasper appeared, tail wagging and eyes gleaming with excitement.
I was struck by a mixture of relief and curiosity, as I stuttered.
"Who... um... who... are you? Where did you come from? And... how do you know my name?"
"I am a wanderer between worlds, a guardian of lost souls," he replied cryptically. "I sensed you were distressed and came to guide you back to your furry friend. I can sense who you are and your name."
"Oh... but who... what are you?" No answer came at first, so I continued. "Are you an alien?"
My eyes widened with a mix of disbelief and wonder.
"In a sense, I suppose I am," he replied, a faint smile playing on his lips. "I have traversed the cosmos, witnessing the birth and death of stars. Yet, I find solace in helping lost souls, whether human or canine."
"How fascinating."
"Why do you say that?"
"Because I'm curious and I want to know more, and what this is and... why you are here, because there is no one here now, in this world, but me."
"I am here to help you."
"Yes... you said... but... wait... this is creepy."
"I am sorry if I have scared you, Daisy. That was not my intention. Come, I will help you find your way back home."
"I'm fine."
"I insist. I want to help you get home as it is dark now and the forest is not safe at night."
As we walked through the fields together, the man revealed fragments of his enigmatic existence. He spoke of galaxies far beyond the reach of human comprehension and of ancient ties that bound him to the Earth.
"What is that I see in the sky?" I asked.
"It is my home."
I watched him point to the sky. I peer upwards at the clouds and suddenly something beneath the mist flashes.
"Oh... wow."
"Wow? What is 'Wow'?" he asked.
"Oh... it's just a word I use if I am excited."
"I understand."
"Do you live there with your family?"
"I do not have a family. They died long ago," he said.
"Oh... I'm very sorry to hear that."
We reached the edge of the fields, and I turned to him with a sense of gratitude and curiosity.
"What's your name?"
"They call me Dayton."
"Do you live in that thing up there? I mean here, on Earth or do you go home when it suits you?"
"I live up there. Sometimes I travel to see other parts of your Earth."
When I stared at him, his eyes twinkled.
"That's so cool. I'd love to see it one day."
"Perhaps," he said, looking at me closely.
I looked him up and down. He was tall with thick silver hair that matched his eyes. He was handsome in a cute kind of way.
The moon peered from behind some trees and I noticed his skin sparkled with tiny stars.
"Will I see you again?" I asked.
He nodded and I saw his silver eyes reflect the starlight.
"When the need arises and when the threads of destiny weave our paths together once more, you may glimpse the shimmering mist, and I shall be there."
"But how? How can you know I will be here?"
"I will sense you from above and then I will appear."
With those words, he vanished into the night, leaving me with a sense of awe as my cottage appeared nearby.
I reunited with Jasper and we walked back side by side. The fields seemed different, imbued with a touch of the extraordinary, and though, the mysterious man was gone, his presence lingered, a reminder that sometimes, in the vastness of the unknown, extraordinary beings may appear when you least expect it, guiding lost souls back to the warmth of home.
I smiled to myself. I was glad I had met someone even if it was a creepy experience in a forest, but he was not a human man. Of course, I didn't care because I was living in a world where there was no one but me around, which kind of got lonely when there was no one to talk to other than Jasper. He couldn't talk back like Dayton could, which made meeting him an excitement I hadn't experienced for a long time.
