The Price of Yesterday

Chapter 3: The Decision

By Shane D. SpearPublished about a year ago 5 min read

Sarah’s mind raced, torn between the desire to change the past and the fear of unintended consequences. The ringmaster watched her with an amused expression, as if he had seen this internal struggle countless times before.

"Take your time, Dr. Matthews," he said, his voice dripping with false sympathy. "This is not a decision to be made lightly."

Sarah glanced at the swirling scenes within the snow globes, each one a vivid reminder of the potential costs. The weight of the decision pressed down on her, making it hard to breathe.

"What happens if I choose not to change anything?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

The ringmaster's smile softened, but there was a hint of something sinister in his eyes. "If you choose to walk away, the carnival will remain here, waiting for the next soul seeking redemption. Your life will continue as it is, untouched by the magic we offer. But remember, the longing for what could have been will always linger."

Sarah looked down at the ticket in her hand, feeling its strange warmth. Her mind flashed back to the moments before the accident—her daughter's laughter, the way the sun had glinted off her golden hair, the last words they had exchanged. The pain of loss was almost unbearable, but the thought of causing someone else to suffer was equally horrifying.

"Can you promise that if I change this moment, the consequences won't be worse than the original event?"she asked, hoping against hope for some reassurance.

The ringmaster shook his head slowly. "I'm afraid not. The universe's balance is beyond our control. We merely offer the opportunity. The choice, and its repercussions, are yours alone to bear."

Sarah felt a tear slip down her cheek. She knew there was no easy answer. The ringmaster extended his hand once more, the ticket still writhing between his fingers like a living thing.

"The Mirror Maze awaits, Dr. Matthews. Will you face it and pay the price, or will you walk away and carry the weight of your past?"

Sarah took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. She looked up, meeting the ringmaster's gaze with determination.

"I'll do it," she said, her voice trembling but resolute. "I'll enter the Mirror Maze."

The ringmaster's grin widened, and he handed her the ticket. "Very well. May you find what you're searching for, Dr. Matthews. But remember, every choice has its price."

With a final glance at the snow globes, Sarah stepped towards the tent, her heart pounding in her chest. The velvet curtains parted, and she walked into the darkness of the Mirror Maze, ready to face whatever lay ahead.

Chapter 4: The First Reflection

Sarah's footsteps echoed softly as she ventured deeper into the Mirror Maze. The air grew colder, and the reflections of her own face stared back at her from every angle, distorted and twisted by the maze's magic. Each mirror seemed to whisper secrets, fragments of memories she had tried to bury.

The ticket in her hand glowed faintly, guiding her through the labyrinth. She could feel the weight of the ringmaster's words pressing down on her—every choice had a price, and she was about to make the most consequential decision of her life.

As she turned a corner, Sarah came face-to-face with a reflection of herself from the day of the accident. She watched as the scene played out: her daughter's laughter, the moment of distraction, the screech of tires. It was all so vivid, so painfully real.

"Why are you doing this?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

The reflection didn't respond, but Sarah could see the anguish in her own eyes. She knew she couldn't change the past without causing ripples that would affect others. But the thought of living with the regret was unbearable.

She continued through the maze, each step bringing new reflections of her past. Memories she had long forgotten resurfaced, each one a reminder of choices made and paths taken. She saw herself as a child, crying over a broken toy; as a teenager, arguing with her parents; as an adult, making decisions that had shaped her life.

The maze twisted and turned, leading her to a chamber filled with mirrors that seemed to stretch into infinity. In the center of the room stood a single, ornate mirror with a frame of silver and gold. The glass was dark, almost black, and Sarah could feel its power drawing her in.

"This is it," she whispered, stepping closer. "This is where I make the change."

She reached out and touched the surface of the mirror, feeling a strange warmth beneath her fingers. The glass rippled like water, and she was pulled into the reflection, the world around her dissolving into darkness.

When the darkness lifted, Sarah found herself back in the past, on the morning of May 15th, 2020. She could hear the sound of her daughter's laughter coming from the kitchen, and her heart ached with longing.

"Mommy, look what I made!" her daughter called, holding up a drawing of their family.

Sarah knelt down and hugged her tightly, tears streaming down her face. She knew she had only one chance to make things right. She would have to be vigilant, careful, and ensure that nothing distracted her from keeping her daughter safe.

As the day progressed, Sarah found herself constantly on edge, watching every move, every decision. The memory of the accident loomed over her, a dark shadow that threatened to consume her.

And then, the moment came. The distraction, the screech of tires—it was all happening again. But this time, Sarah was ready. She grabbed her daughter and pulled her to safety, the car missing them by inches.

She held her daughter close, her heart pounding with relief. She had done it. She had changed the past.

But as the day continued, Sarah noticed small, unsettling changes. People she had known for years seemed different, their lives altered in ways she couldn't quite understand. The balance had shifted, and she could feel the universe's ledger being adjusted.

That night, as Sarah put her daughter to bed, she wondered what the true cost of her decision would be. She had saved her daughter's life, but at what price? The ringmaster's warning echoed in her mind, a constant reminder that every choice had consequences.

As she looked into her daughter's eyes, she knew that whatever the cost, she would face it head-on. She had made her choice, and she would live with it, no matter what the future held.
