The Price of Yesterday
Chapter 1 The Carnival of Lost Souls

Chapter 1: The Carnival of Lost Souls
Sarah Matthews was no stranger to the impossible. As a quantum physicist at Cambridge University, she'd spent her career probing the boundaries of reality, seeking answers in the spaces between moments. Yet nothing in her academic training had prepared her for the sight that greeted her on an otherwise unremarkable Thursday evening.
She was walking home from a particularly grueling day in the lab when she first saw the carnival. The field where it had appeared had been empty that morning – just a patch of grass bordered by the bare-leafed trees of late autumn. But now, as dusk settled, a riot of lights and colors had sprung into existence, painting the twilight with hues of orange and red that seemed almost too vivid to be real.
Drawn by a mixture of curiosity and unease, Sarah found herself drifting towards the carnival. As she crossed the threshold into the carnival grounds, a shiver ran down her spine. The air here felt different – thicker, charged with an energy that made the hairs on her arms stand on end.
The Ferris wheel was the first thing she noticed. Its frame, impossibly tall and skeletal, towered over the other attractions, adorned with lights that pulsed in colors she couldn't quite name. She could hear the distant strains of music, a haunting melody that tugged at something deep within her.
As she wandered further into the carnival, she saw other attractions – a carousel with horses whose eyes seemed to follow her, a hall of mirrors that twisted her reflection into grotesque shapes, and tents filled with wonders and horrors alike. But it was the central tent, larger and darker than the rest, that drew her like a moth to a flame.
The sign above the entrance read "Carnival of Lost Souls." Sarah hesitated, her hand going to the locket around her neck – the one containing the last photo of her daughter, Emma, taken just hours before the accident five years ago. The memory of that day still haunted her, a wound that time had never quite healed.
Before she could change her mind, she pushed through the heavy velvet curtains and stepped inside.

Chapter 2: The Ringmaster's Offer
The interior of the tent was a labyrinth of shadows and flickering lights. The walls seemed to pulse with a life of their own, casting eerie reflections that twisted and writhed. At the center of the tent stood a figure dressed in a ringmaster's costume, his top hat casting a shadow that stretched across the floor like a sundial's hand.
"Welcome, Dr. Matthews," the ringmaster said, his voice a smooth, velvety purr. "We've been expecting you."
Sarah's heart skipped a beat. "How do you know my name?"
The ringmaster's smile widened, revealing teeth that glinted like distant stars. "The Carnival of Lost Souls knows many things. We offer a very special service to those carrying particular... regrets. "Please, come closer" exclaimed the man. "Would you like to know more?"
Every rational part of Sarah's mind screamed that this was impossible, dangerous, and wrong. But she found herself nodding, unable to resist the pull of the ringmaster's words.
"Excellent," he said, extending a hand that seemed to shimmer in the dim light. "Come with me, and I'll show you."
As they walked through the maze of tents and attractions, the ringmaster explained the carnival's purpose. "Every attraction here offers a chance to revisit a moment from your past. The Ferris wheel lets you observe any memory from above, safe and distant. The carousel spins you through multiple possibilities of a single choice. But what you're looking for..." He gestured to a black tent set slightly apart from the others. "That requires the Mirror Maze."
The tent's entrance was draped with heavy velvet curtains that seemed to absorb all light. A sign above read "CHANGE ONE MOMENT" in letters that crawled across the fabric like living things. making the hair on the back of Sarah's neck stand on end.
"The rules are simple," the ringmaster said. "The maze will take you back to any moment you choose. You can make one change – save a life, speak words left unsaid, or take a different path. "It's up to you to decide." said the man with an eerie grin. But remember: every moment has its price, and the maze ensures that price is always paid... by someone."
Sarah's hand tightened around her locket. "And if I want to go back to May 15th, 2020?"
"Ah, the day of the accident. Of course." The ringmaster produced a ticket from thin air, the paper seeming to writhe between his fingers. "But first, you should know that others have tried similar changes. Perhaps you'd like to see?"
He led her to a smaller tent filled with what looked like snow globes. But instead of snow, each contained swirling scenes playing out in endless loops. The ringmaster picked one up.
"Professor James Chen," he said. "Brilliant physicist like yourself. Went back to stop his brother's suicide. Succeeded, too. But the universe demands balance – the life he saved required another to be taken. His pregnant wife died in a car crash the next day, along with their unborn son. The brother he saved hasn't spoken to him since."
He set down the globe and picked up another. "Maria Gonzalez. Went back to prevent her daughter's drowning. The girl lived, but three other children died in a school bus accident the following week. Maria couldn't live with the knowledge that her choice had killed others. She's in an institution now, but the carnival keeps her globe as a reminder that some prices are higher than we expect."
Sarah watched the scenes play out, each one a testament to the cruel mathematics of fate. "Why show me these?"
"Because, Dr. Matthews, you need to understand that what you're considering isn't simply saving your daughter. It's trading her fate for another's. The universe maintains its ledgers with brutal precision. A life saved demands a life taken. Are you prepared to make that choice? To decide who pays the price for your happiness?"
