The Portal in the Attic
A Journey Between Two Worlds

When 16-year-old Ben Myers first discovered the secret attic in his small-town home, he thought it was nothing more than a hidden storage space. He had explored the rest of the old house many times, but the attic door had always been locked, tucked away behind old furniture and forgotten relics from a bygone era.
One evening, after his parents had gone out for the night, Ben decided to explore further. He had always been curious about the strange noises that seemed to come from behind the attic door—like faint whispers or the sound of something shifting in the dark. Armed with a flashlight, he jimmied the lock and opened the door.
The attic was just as dusty as he had imagined, filled with old boxes, forgotten furniture, and piles of newspapers. But in the far corner, hidden beneath a heavy sheet, he saw something strange—an archway. It wasn’t like anything he had ever seen before. The wood around it was ancient, carved with intricate designs that seemed to shimmer in the dim light. The arch stood alone, without any door, but the air around it felt heavier, charged with an energy Ben couldn’t explain.
Curious, Ben stepped closer to the arch. As his hand brushed against the wooden frame, he felt a sudden pull, as if the arch itself was beckoning him. Without thinking, he stepped through.

On the other side, Ben found himself in a world that was both eerily familiar and completely alien. The sky was a vibrant shade of purple, the air thick with the scent of wildflowers and something else he couldn’t place. Tall, twisted trees stretched toward the sky, their branches adorned with glowing, bioluminescent flowers. The ground beneath his feet felt soft, almost like sand, but it was made of some kind of shimmering, silvery material.
Ben looked around in awe, realizing that the landscape seemed to shift as he walked. The trees were not static; they seemed to move and sway in response to his presence, and the air hummed with a strange energy.
He turned around to see the attic door still behind him, but it wasn’t just a doorway anymore—it was a shimmering, translucent portal. Ben could see the outline of his old house through it, but the familiar setting of his childhood home now felt like a distant memory, an echo of a life that wasn’t his anymore.
As Ben cautiously stepped further into the strange world, he began to notice something even stranger. He was not alone.
Figures moved between the trees—humanoid shapes, but with features that seemed to blur and shift with the wind. Some were tall and graceful, while others were shorter and stockier, but they all shared one thing in common: they were all looking at him. Their eyes glowed with an otherworldly light, and their expressions were unreadable.
Ben’s heart raced. He had no idea where he was or what these beings were, but the curiosity inside him pushed him to step forward.

“Who are you?” a voice suddenly called out.
Ben spun around to find a figure standing before him. It was a tall woman, dressed in flowing robes made of a fabric that shimmered like the sky above. Her hair was long and silver, and her eyes glowed with a soft, green light.
“I’m… Ben,” he stammered, still trying to make sense of what was happening. “I… I don’t know how I got here.”
The woman smiled, but her smile was not reassuring. It was knowing, as though she had been waiting for him.
“You’ve found the portal,” she said. “The one that links our world with yours. You’ve crossed into the Parallel Realm.”
“The Parallel Realm?” Ben repeated, his mind struggling to understand.
“Yes,” she nodded. “This world exists alongside your own. It is where the lost things go. The forgotten. The things that have no place in your world.”
Ben’s mind raced. “But… I didn’t mean to come here. I was just exploring my attic.”
“You came for a reason,” the woman said cryptically. “The portal does not open by chance. It only opens for those who need it.”
Ben didn’t know what to think. The idea of a parallel world, a place that existed alongside his own but was completely different, was overwhelming. The woman, sensing his confusion, motioned for him to follow.
“Come,” she said. “I’ll show you more. You have much to learn about this place.”

As the woman led him deeper into the Parallel Realm, Ben began to realize that everything about this world was different. The trees, the sky, the creatures—everything seemed to defy the laws of physics. There were creatures flying in the sky with wings that flickered like stars. Buildings, made from materials Ben didn’t recognize, rose out of the ground like living things.
Despite the beauty, something felt off. The air was thick with tension, and Ben couldn’t shake the feeling that something important was happening around him. He felt as if he were being watched by something far beyond his understanding.
After what felt like hours, they reached a clearing, and the woman stopped.
“You must choose,” she said, her voice serious now. “The portal between our worlds will not remain open forever. You must decide: will you return to your world, or will you stay and learn the secrets of this realm?”
Ben looked around, his heart heavy with the weight of the decision. The Parallel Realm was beautiful, but it was also filled with unknown dangers. He longed for the familiarity of home, but there was something inside him—an urge to explore, to understand, to learn—that wanted to stay.
“I don’t know,” Ben admitted. “I didn’t even know this place existed.”
The woman nodded, as if she had expected this answer. “You will know when the time is right.”
With that, she turned and began to walk back toward the portal.
Ben stood there for a long moment, staring at the shimmering doorway. He knew the decision he made would change everything, but he didn’t yet know which world he truly belonged to.

The Portal in the Attic would forever be a story of two worlds intertwined, and Ben was caught in the middle. The choice between the familiar and the unknown loomed before him, as his adventure in the Parallel Realm was only just beginning.
