The myth of Thor's journey to the land of giants

The myth of Thor's journey to the land of giants

By MOSTAFA SALMANPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

Thor, who is the son of Odin, the god of thunder and the protector of humans, faced a tough task. He had a big problem, and it all began when he, along with his fast human servant Thjalfi and Loki, the tricky god, went on a journey to Jotunheim, the land of the giants.

On the way, they met a giant named Skrymir who offered to help them and carry their food in his bag. But when they set up camp, Skrymir fell asleep, and Thor couldn't open the bag. Thor got frustrated and hungry. He tried to wake the giant three times by hitting his head with his hammer as hard as he could. But every time, Skrymir thought it was just an acorn falling and went back to sleep. The next morning, Skrymir left, and they eventually reached a huge fortress called Utgard.

Inside the hall, they met the giant king, Utgard-Loki. He welcomed them but gave them a challenge. Each of them had to prove they were the best at something. Loki went first and claimed to be the fastest eater. To test him, the king brought his servant Logi, and they had a food race. Loki was quick, but Logi not only ate all the food but also the bones and even the food container.

Next was Thjalfi, who claimed he could outrun anything in the wild. The king summoned an ethereal-looking giant named Hugi, who easily beat Thjalfi. Thjalfi demanded a rematch and came close behind, but Hugi was still faster. In a third attempt, Thjalfi ran his fastest, but Hugi was even faster than before.

Finally, it was Thor's turn. The king gave him a drinking horn and said his men could drink it in two sips. Thor tried to drink it, but the horn didn't empty. Then the king asked Thor to lift his pet cat, which was as tall as Thor. Thor struggled to lift it and only managed to lift one paw.

Thor got angry and wanted to wrestle one of the giants. The king called the old nursemaid, Elli, who looked frail but overpowered Thor. Thor grew weaker the more he struggled until he was brought to one knee.

As they were leaving, the king revealed that everything in the castle was an illusion. Loki lost the eating contest because Logi was like wildfire, consuming everything. Thjalfi couldn't outrun Hugi because Hugi represented thought, always quicker than action. Thor couldn't defeat Elli because she symbolized old age, which weakens everyone.

The other challenges were also illusions. The drinking horn was filled with the ocean, and Thor's drinking affected the tides. The cat was the serpent that circles the world, and Thor's efforts caused the earth to shake. Skrymir had been Utgard-Loki in disguise, forming valleys in the mountains by deflecting Thor's hammer blows.

The giant congratulated them for their efforts but was too scared to let them stay in his land. Thor and his companions may have failed the challenges, but in trying to do the impossible, they pushed themselves harder than ever before and changed the world in unexpected ways.
