The Man in the Fields Ritual is a high-stakes paranormal game that can bring you great rewards—but only if you succeed in completing the ritual. The game is said to offer protection and good fortune for one year if you win. However, failure to complete the ritual or breaking its rules can lead to terrifying consequences, including eternal servitude to the Man in the Fields.
This game involves summoning a mysterious entity, often depicted as a scarecrow-like figure who will stalk your property. Your objective is to secure your home and avoid encountering the Man in the Fields before sunrise.
What You Will Need:
A House with a Yard or Garden; A Timepiece. A clock, watch, or timer to keep track of the time during the ritual; A Candle; Matches or a Lighter; A Quiet Night
Rules:
You Must Begin the Ritual Exactly at Midnight. Timing is critical. Starting too early or too late could result in failure and invoke the wrath of the entity. Never Look Directly at the Man in the Fields. Looking at him directly could cause immediate failure, resulting in dire consequences. Complete the Task Before Sunrise.
Preparation:
The ritual must begin exactly at midnight, so be sure to prepare everything in advance. You’ll need to complete the ritual before dawn, so be mindful of how long you have.
Make sure you have a house with a yard or garden. The ritual works best in an isolated area. Set up a candle in the room you will start in (ideally, it should be the kitchen, though this isn’t a strict requirement). Ensure the house is quiet, and no one else is awake or around to disturb you.
Playing the Game:
Exactly at midnight, light the candle using the matches or lighter. The candle symbolizes your protection during the ritual. Make sure the flame stays lit throughout the game. If the candle goes out before you finish the ritual, you are no longer safe.
Leave the house and walk to the garden or yard, holding the candle. As you stand there, say aloud: "But who will scare away the crows?" This is your invitation to summon the Man in the Fields.
After saying the phrase, remain still for a few moments. You may feel a shift in the air or hear faint rustling in the distance. This is the sign that the Man in the Fields has arrived.
After you sense his presence, return to the house. Do not look back at the garden or yard. The Man in the Fields will now begin his pursuit, but he will not enter the house immediately. From this point on, you must secure your house by closing and locking every door, window, and opening.
The Task:
Starting from the room closest to where you entered, you must close and lock every door and window in the house. Do this one room at a time, ensuring that no door or window is left unsecured. Be methodical, but move quickly—time is limited.
The Man in the Fields will begin to approach the house as you secure it. You will likely sense his presence outside, and the sound of scratching or footsteps may start at the windows or doors. Stay calm and do not acknowledge him.
If you happen to see the Man in the Fields through a window, do not look directly at him. Keep your gaze averted and continue securing the house. Looking at him directly will end the game, and you will lose.
The Final Door:
Once all the doors and windows are secured, you must go to the attic or basement—whichever is the farthest and most isolated room in your house. This is where the final challenge lies.
At this point, the Man in the Fields will be somewhere inside the house. You will hear movement and may sense him nearby, but you must not let fear distract you from your task.
When you reach the attic or basement, stand at the entrance and say aloud: "It is done." This signifies that you have completed the ritual.
After speaking the words, blow out the candle. This ends the ritual and severs the connection with the Man in the Fields.
If You Succeed:
If you successfully complete the ritual before dawn, you will be granted protection from misfortune, bad luck, and harm for one full year. Your home will be safe, and good fortune will follow you. Some versions of the legend claim that succeeding in the ritual also brings increased wealth or happiness, though these rewards vary depending on the source.
If You Fail:
If you fail to secure all the doors and windows before dawn, or if you break the rules by looking directly at the Man in the Fields, you lose the game. The consequences for failure are said to be severe:
The Man in the Fields will take you away to serve him forever, becoming a scarecrow-like figure that will haunt the fields. In some versions, failure results in being cursed, causing misfortune, illness, or even death within the year.
If at any point the candle goes out before you complete the ritual, the protection is lost. The Man in the Fields will immediately enter the house, and it is said that you will never see dawn.
NOTE:
Once started, the ritual must be completed. Abandoning it midway through can lead to dangerous consequences. The ritual should only be attempted once per year. Multiple attempts weaken the boundary between our world and the Man in the Fields, increasing your chances of losing the game. This is not a game to play for fun or lightly. The stakes are high, and the consequences are real for those who fail to complete the ritual properly.
The Man in the Fields Ritual is not just a test of courage and focus but also a gamble with an unknown entity. Those brave (or foolish) enough to play should proceed with caution, knowing that success may bring rewards, but failure could cost everything.
