THE LOCKET

LESSONS

The locket is a fictional story, based on, a daughter losing her mother, during a war. When josiah leaves for duty, he gives his daughter, a blue locket, passed down, four generations.

Spending quality time, is always, important, before a soldier leaves for war. It was a dark afternoon, in april, when josiah, left to aid in war operations, on the other side, of the world. Upon arriving, he’s told, that he could only, engage, in limited communication with his family. Twice a month, he sends a letter, back home, to louisiana.

In these letters, Josiah, recounts, freighting events, happening around him. Bombs dropping, crossing lakes, filled with the unknown, and his desire, to only, be home, with his family. War, always creates a communication gap, but somewhere, in between the distance, the heart grows fonder. The love between Josiah and his wife, teach lessons, in love and loyalty. Josiah and his wife eva, have a daughter named madelyn. Madelyn, is a 12 year old girl, who loves her father, with all her heart. Madelyn, is outside playing with friends one afternoon, and the postmaster, approaches their home. He hands Madelyn a letter, wrapped in brown paper, and a bow tied around it. She takes the letter, into her mother eva. Eva and Madelyn open the letter together. Eva reads the first page, and begins to cry, as she reads, she only imagines, the terror, her husband, must be going through. As she gets to the end of the letter, she gains her composure. Josiah tells Eva, that his love, her and madelyn, gives him reasons, reasons to keep going, reasons to keep fighting, so they can continue, to have freedom. Eva looks at madelyn, and says, keep your fathers locket, close to your heart, for he’s the reason, we’ll succeed, and his courage, will keep us strong.

Matters Of The Heart

Eva and Madelyn, take their letter, and place it, in a box, with the others. They find ways to get through their day, without thinking of the terrible times, Josiah is facing, during this cruel war.

Weeks later, madelyn is playing outside, and postmaster, returns again, this time, with two letters. Madelyn, takes these letters, into the house, so that her mother can read them. Eva begins to read. “My dear love, i’ll be coming home soon.” Madelyn and eva, are excited. They jump for joy. Eva places the letters, in the box, and starts to prepare, the house, for Josiah’s homecoming. She’s says madelyn, where’s your locket,your father gave to you, before he left?. Madelyn goes into her room, and takes the locket, out of a beautiful box, covered with blue roses, with a ballerina, spinning at the center. Madelyn gives the locket to her mother. Eva opens the locket, and begins to place, new pictures on both sides of the locket. One picture, had her mother and father on one side, and her grandparents photo, on the other side. After adding the new photos, to the locket, madelyn, places the locket, back into her box. Eva and madelyn, prepare for weeks, for his return. Leaves, were dropping to the ground, the wind picking up, winter was coming soon. Madelyn and eva we’re preparing, for christmas. Eva and madelyn, prepare, to go to town, to find the perfect christmas tree. They select a tree, and bring it home, to decorate. As they’re decorating, their christmas tree, Josiah walks through the door. They cry and embrace each other. What a perfect christmas gift, it was. Josiah says, ladies grab your coats, we’re going to town. While eva and madelyn, are in another store, Josiah picks another locket, this time, for the love of his life, eva. The cashier wraps the locket, and they return home, to celebrate their holiday together.

On christmas morning, they wake, to open their gifts. He hands the locket to Eva, and says, I give my heart to you, in the form of gift. Eva, smiles from ear, to ear. As they end holidays, Josiah prepares, to tell Eva, that he has to leave, once more. Two weeks following christmas, Josiah, prepares once again, to leave. Eva, was feeling sick, feeling down. He tells Eva, I’ll be back soon.

About a week after Josiah returns to war, he gets a telegram, saying that his dear eva, had passed away, and their precious madelyn, was residing with family. Josiah prepared to return home. Once he gets home, madelyn, hands him, eva's locket. She says, mom wanted you to have this. He hugs his precious madelyn, and they bury eva, in a peaceful ceremony.
