Three years ago, if you’d asked me, "Can you cook?" my answer would’ve been a sheepish, “Umm... I can make Maggie” And even that was hit or miss—either overcooked or too watery. Life was simple and uncomplicated until I got married.

My wife, Riya, was a superhero in disguise. Even during her pregnancy, she cooked every meal, managed an 11-hour workday, and took care of our son, Aarav. I, Arjun, was a business analyst back then, and though I tried to help by chopping vegetables or switching off the gas, I could sense that it wasn’t enough. Riya never complained, but I started noticing the small signs of stress behind her smile. The guilt of being a passive participant in our household began gnawing at me.

So, I made a bold decision—to take a six-month sabbatical from my job. I knew Riya would protest, so I didn’t tell her the real reason. My mission was to run our home, raise Aarav, and master the art of cooking.

One sunny morning, I decided it was time to reveal my plan. I wanted to surprise Riya with a homemade meal. I spent four nerve-wracking hours in the kitchen, armed with YouTube tutorials and a lot of hope. The result? A mutton curry meal that I prayed would be edible.

When Riya walked in, tired but with her usual warm smile, I served the dinner. Her eyes widened. “Where did you order from?” she asked, taking a cautious bite. Her eyes closed, and she sighed, “Mmmm, this is the best mutton curry I’ve ever eaten. Where is it from?”

When I told her that I made it, her disbelief quickly turned into sheer joy. The look on her face was priceless—a mix of surprise, pride, and love. From that day forward, I took charge of the kitchen.

Fast forward to today, and I’ve got a new job with shorter hours. Every evening, I dedicate an hour to cooking and another to playing with Aarav. Our home buzzes with laughter and the aroma of fresh meals. But what I cherish the most is watching Riya relax after work, enjoying the dinners I prepare with the biggest smile on her face.

In these three years, our roles have evolved, but the essence of our partnership remains the same. Riya’s unwavering support and my determination to make her life easier have brought us closer. We’ve found a rhythm that works for us—a balance of love, respect, and shared responsibilities.

Cooking, which once felt like an alien task, has now become a passion. I experiment with recipes and try new dishes, turning our kitchen into a culinary adventure ground. Aarav, our little critic, often gives his two cents, making the experience even more delightful.

Looking back, I realize that the journey to mastering cooking was never just about the food. It was about love, support, and showing Riya that she’s not alone. It was about transforming from a passive bystander to an active partner in our life together.

Life isn’t always perfect—there are days when the curry doesn’t taste quite right, or when work pressures mount. But through it all, we’ve learned to support each other, to laugh at our mistakes, and to cherish the small moments of joy.

In the end, it’s the journey that counts. And as I see Riya’s contentment and Aarav’s happy face at the dinner table, I know that every step we’ve taken together has been worth it.

Here's to many more meals, many more smiles, and a lifetime of love and partnership.
