"The Final Train"
The historic train station was encircled by swirling nighttime fog. With the hands slowly approaching the hour that no one could fully explain—the moment when the last train would depart—the wall clock indicated that it was almost midnight.
Standing on the platform, Samantha could see her breath in the chilly air. The previous trains had been missed by her. She was now anticipating the one that would bring her home. Or so she believed.
With the exception of a few late-night passengers with exhausted and drawn features, the station was mostly deserted. As individuals rushed to their destinations, the enormous hall occasionally reverberated with the sound of footfall. Samantha's gaze, however, remained focused on the train tracks in front of her. The day had been exhausting, full of appointments, meetings, and the burden of a life that seemed to be getting out of hand.
The Last Train
The night fog swirled around the ancient rail station. The wall clock showed that it was nearly midnight, the hands steadily moving toward the hour no one could quite explain—the hour when the last train would leave.
Samantha could feel her breath in the cold air as she stood on the platform. She had not seen the earlier trains. Now she was waiting for the one that would take her home. Or so she thought.
The station was largely empty, save for a few late-night travelers with drawn and tired faces. Sometimes the sound of footsteps echoed across the vast hall as people hurried to their destinations. But Samantha's eyes continued to focus on the railroad lines ahead. With appointments, meetings, and the weight of a seemingly out-of-control existence, the day had been grueling.
She could not tell if it was hours or just minutes that went by. Samantha could not get rid of the feeling that something was not right as the atmosphere in the car grew denser. The signal was gone when she tried to concentrate on her phone. She scanned the car once more, taking in for the first time the peculiarity of the interior design—the flickering lamps, the locked doors at either end, and, most disturbing of all, the utter quiet that pervaded the space.
Samantha was flung against the side of her seat when the train suddenly rocked severely. Her heart was racing when the train's pace seemed to suddenly accelerate, and she gasped in surprise. In an attempt to calm herself, she put her hands against the armrests, but the motion's force caused her stomach to turn.
With shaky knees, she stood up and ran down the aisle to the door. However, she discovered that it was locked when she arrived. Her chest tightened with panic. What is going on? She glanced out the window once more, but the scene was different. The train was surrounded by a spinning vortex of black mist that seemed a living entity, replacing the gloomy countryside.
Suddenly, a voice crackled across the intercom.
"Everyone aboard the final train needs to get ready for their destination."
Samantha felt cold when she heard those words. Her thoughts were racing as she staggered back. Where will you end up? The train car's walls seemed to close in on her as her breath became more rapid.
The train suddenly lurched once more, knocking her off her feet this time. Breathless, she fell hard to the ground. As she got up, she saw something that chilled her to the bone: the previously vacant chairs were now occupied. Shadowed figures with their faces veiled sat motionless, gazing straight ahead as though they were waiting for something.
She stumbled back, her thoughts racing. Was this a dream? Did she have hallucinations?
Samantha's panic peaked as the train kept speeding through the darkness. She needed to get off. She needed to get away. She hurried to the door again, but she made no attempt to open it this time. Rather, she beat her fists against the glass.
"Please!" she cried out loud. "Let me off!"
However, nobody answered.
The train started to slow down just as she was about to lose it. The fog outside appeared to clear, and the odd hum that had pervaded the area subsided. A little, quiet station appeared ahead as the train's headlights dimmed. Pale light filled the platform, and the passengers' shadows appeared to disappear into the fog.
At last, the train stopped. The quiet was nearly oppressive. Samantha walked cautiously and slowly to the door. It opened easily this time. The burden of the nightmare began to fade as she stepped outside and breathed in the clean air.
She surveyed the area. She had left a station that was very different from this one. "Welcome to the End of the Line" was written on the sign above the platform. It dawned on her for the first time that this was no typical train.
But no one responded.
She was on the verge of losing it when the train began to slow down. The strange hum that had been in the air seemed to fade, and the fog outside seemed to disperse. The train's headlights dimmed and a little, silent station came into view ahead. The platform was bathed in pale light, and the shadows of the passengers seemed to melt into the mist.
The train finally came to a stop. The silence was almost deafening. Samantha approached the door carefully and warily. This time, it opened with ease. As she stepped outside and took in the fresh air, the weight of the nightmare started to lighten.
She looked around. This station was a far cry from the one she had left. Above the platform, a sign said, "Welcome to the End of the Line". For the first time, she realized that this was no ordinary train.
