The train bucked, and Jacob slammed his head against the carriage’s floorboards. Everything around him seemed a blur, including the details of his escape toward India.

Jacob froze.

The man stood silently across the carriage. No words came from a jaw blown apart by artillery. Dried blood caked the holes in his Expeditionary Force uniform.

Jacob never knew his name, yet he never forgot him.

He went over the top before Jacob.

He was the man who took Jacob’s place as he cowered in that muddy trench.

“I’m sorry,” Jacob mustered feebly.

Yet the man remained.
