The Duality of Twins

It's funny how the same upbringing could so frequently produce such different people. It was never more prominent, to my own belief, than in myself and my sister. Identical twin girls, you would expect us to be the same right down to our breakfast preferences. You wouldn't be alone in this view, either.

But different we most certainly were.

Our childhood wasn't all sunshine and roses by any stretch of the imagination. Our dad left before we were born and our mother... Well, let's just say she made a good show of it when necessary but otherwise acted like we didn't exist.

Whenever our uncle came home from active duty was the best time of our lives. He would dote on us and treat us like human beings, let alone family. But he always had to go. Until one day, when we had managed to survive 15 years in this dichotomy, we heard the news that he had left us for the final time. An IED, they said.

This news was the catalyst in mine and my sister's now diverging paths. For one of us, this was the final straw that she would ensure no one else ever lived like we'd had to. For the other, it was that if she had had to live like this, others would suffer too.

Oh, we both worked hard, don't get me wrong. We both worked our respective asses off to get as far away as we possibly could. No one else noticed the changes in us for years. Not until they had solidified and it was too late.

Years later, we ended up in the same city once again. We both had been through even more shit, this time different to each other, and come out with otherworldly abilities that we started putting to good use to further our desires. And then we came face to face. Naturally we recognised each other - it was still like staring into a mirror, even now. Except... Now we are mortal enemies. I will fight even her if it means dealing justice out.

Maybe she's hopeful. For the future. For the world. For us. But I know the truth. I won't be stopped until the whole world feels my same righteous fury. I won't stop until everyone has felt my pain. Until the whole world understands me. Understands us.

Sure, maybe I do this more than a little bit for me. But I would burn the whole world down for what was done to her.
