“There weren’t always dragons in the valley right?” asked Jade Standsone as she stared at her brother. Her purple hair was almost black against the moonlight, her dark blue eyes were transfixed in the sky.

“Not that I recall,” Felix said, his black jet hair covering his grey eyes.

Felix and Jade stopped in their tracks, the two of them were looking to the sky watching in horror as a very large dark gray metallic dragon flew towards them. Its talons were larger than Jade’s and Felix's silver swords. Its teeth were sharp and sparkling white like diamonds in the night sky making the sight much more terrifying. The dragon’s eyes were coloured like orange fire embers as they darted looking for a midnight snack. Felix could feel the hairs on the back of his neck rise, he looked over at his sister and he could see goosebumps on her arms. The dragon let out a loud cry making the ground shake underneath their feet.

“What do we do?” whispered Jade as she grabbed Firus’s arm.

“Run!” he shouted and the two of them sprinted to the opposite direction of the dragon. Felix pulled his sister’s hand and pushed her to run faster. Jade was running as fast as her legs could carry her, sweat dripped down her back as they ran. Her heart drummed loudly against her chest. Felix heart was catching up to him as he tried to catch his breath. They disappeared back into the forest where they had just come from. The dragon let out a roar of disappointment making the ground shake and Jade tripped over a root. Felix quickly helped her off the ground and they continued to run through the forest. The dragon wanting to chase them flew up over the trees creating a gust of wind with his large metallic wings. The dragon made a gurgling noise with his throat.

“He’s going to shoot fire!” shouted Felix. Jade and Firus kept running while dodging tree branches and rocks that stood in their way. Firus cursed under his breath as a tree branch scratched his ripping his sleeve open. Just then the dragon opened his large mouth and fire came from his mouth, and it burned the tops of the trees, the air now smelled of ash and pine.

“This way!” hissed a voice to Jade’s left and before Jade knew it she was being pulled, and she grabbed Felix without thinking and they followed the mysterious stranger into a cave.

“We are safe in here!” said the voice and once Jade and Felix caught their breaths they realized it was a dwarf who had saved their lives.

"Who are you?" asked Jade.

"My name is Jamlin, I am a cave dwarf, there are not many of now that dragons have moved into the valley," he said as he poked at his fire with a stick.

"Since, when are there dragons though?" asked Felix.

"The dragons were forced here, by the high elves, we all know they have the knowledge that neither a dragon or a human or a dwarf has, they started by cutting down their habitats," explained Jamlin.

"Since when do elves need trees and what for?" asked Felix as he sat down near the fire.

"That's the thing no one knows, they have been acting out of character since Lord Elrond of the elves has passed away, I am worried that dark times are ahead of us," said Jamlin.

"We are on a mission and we need to get to the elves and now I think we know why," said Jade.

"Wait are you, Jade and Felix, the rangers?" asked the dwarf absolutely dumbfounded.

"Yes, we need to find out what is going on with the elves and the dragons that are out there," said Jade.

"Then, I will join you on this quest," said Jamlin as he grabbed his large axe and he equipped his shield.
