The Church by the Road

A chilling encounter after school in Mabima

By Rohitha LankaPublished 9 months ago 2 min read

This story is an encounter that I myself lived through. This is a story from somewhere in Mabima. I shall not say what the village was. There is a big Christian church near where I am referring to. It is very beautiful. Their yard is there.'' It is on the right in the direction we are travelling. Today's tale is about this church and the graveyard. So one day I'm walking home after school. It was about 8:00 pm. Once out of the bus, the place I referred to was about 100 meters from there.

At that time, I had to stay late for studies at school because I was in A/L, and I got my school bag and got off the bus as usual. I approached this church. There was some kind of festival at the church that day, so it was pretty crowded. That's how I was able to go without any fear, so I went by myself because my grandmother was delayed in gett it from me. As I was passing, I met what sounded like someone crying at the church gate. So I went straight to see it. I've heard a woman screaming behind the church. I didn't even notice it. Somehow, being alone, there was houses a little bit there, but I was feeling like someone was following me. So I didn't look back, but I knew I was going to screw up. And that's why I began, swiftly, rapidly walking. Anyway, I picked up the pace a couple of steps. Found. Out by the back of the church, I saw a woman crying behind a woman. She gazed at the woman with a melancholy look. I figured there was something wrong with the family. It was a lamppost right there, my mother. When I looked at it, I saw a coconut tree. That woman who was crying was buried that day. I mean, the people who came to the funeral, they had been there so long. The two of us ran and ran, saying, "Malamagulai, my wife, my legs are gold." When I ran, that is grandmother came. 😒 I wanted to know why they took so long. I must go to the other world soon. 🤣

My grandmother asked why. I explained. My grandmother called me once and said, ''You shouldn't watch a movie until night and go to sleep, then you won't see that sadness. 🤣🤣
