The bull was raging in the ring where the rodeo was going on. The rider had already been thrown and severely injured. They had to get the rider out quick. The rodeo clowns distracted the raging animal, who had just thrown another cowboy. The rodeo clowns earn their money and are able to get yet another cowboy out safely.
The next rider with a different bull are in the chute. How long will this rider last before he is thrown or he is declared winner by riding for eight seconds. As the cowboy starts to mount the bull, the animal starts to thrash about in the chute. As he does, he pins the cowboy against the fence and the cowboy hears a snap. That is it, this cowboy is out of this rodeo and off the circuit for a while. The bull broke his femur in two places. This is the third time in seven years he has met a similar fate and he keeps returning to the rodeo. Most men do return. But due to the bull's violent thrashing, they had to put the animal down. The cowboy is in the hospital recovering when the nurse says put another notch in your saddle or whatever else you do. She said I hope you are happy, they had to put the bull down.
The cowboy is always got two things on his mind, the next rodeo and his woman, however; most women lose out unless they are involved in the rodeo themselves. The cowboys who receive broken bones are the fortunate ones, some have lost their lives in this sport. These bulls are big, mean and nasty according to their riders. Bull riding has bee around as long as there have been cowboys, or ranch hands. You only have to last on this beast for eight seconds and you win. But that is the longest eight seconds of your life
Why do cowboys do this? Why do they try to ride an animal for eight seconds knowing you could be killed? Most say it is for the thrill of the sport. But ranchers always wants to have adventure. I love the mutten busters at the rodeo, the little kids who lasso the sheep feet. Going to the rodeo is fun and can be exciting, just be careful where you step. When I was stationed in Germany as a US Soldier, they brought the rodeo through to numerous cities and mine was one. I had a great time, but it wasn't like Vegas or Cheyenne.
The greatest event in the rodeo in my opinion is the bull riding and the bucking broncs as well as the kids. I have the utmost respect for bull riders as they are some of the toughest men and bravest because anything can happen with that two thousand pound animal. I lived in Denver and the stock show came to town every January, and we felt it. That is when we got some of our coldest weather for the winter. I always took my kids to the various events. It was fun to watch the sheep shearing, but they still had a rodeo every night and those big bulls would be ready to go as well as the cowboys.
There have been many bull riders killed by bulls, one of the most noted is Lane Frost. Lane was thrown from the bull, bounced into the air, then gored to death. They made a movie called eight seconds about Lane's life. It was a pity that a person died, but the bull rider knows and assumes all risks in participating in the event. Every cowboy knows that death is a possibility when riding bulls. I think George Strait says it best in these two songs https://youtu.be/wtVeDaZxAXo https://youtu.be/Fl8mIULRYGA
