The Bioluminescent Beasts
The Debt of Time and Space
Fairies did not exist, but the Deconica Coprophungi did not mind they were confused as another being. The Deconica did not mind much at all except maintaining the balance of the universe. They lived both inside and outside of time and space.
“We do not meddle in the dealings with Mother Fungi,” Governor Deconica Rayfus would tell his rambunctious son, Deconica Pilfus.
Pilfus knew of the evil man enshrined in Deconica Kingdom’s oval outhouse of glowing blue mushrooms. Pilfus also knew that a shift was coming, a tide of uneasiness, he felt it as much as he could see it. No one believed him.
“Even if the evil man were to wake,” Rayfus would say, “there is nothing to be done. It is the will of Mother Fungi.”
“Doesn’t Mother Fungi demand balance?” Pilfus would ask.
“Mother Fungi decides what is and is not balance,” Rayfus would quickly retort.
Pilfus walked the grounds of the kingdom, back and forth, through vines of time and puddles of space. When he came to the outhouse and watched, mesmerized, as a queen bee crashed in the center of the glowing mushroom patch.
The weight of the bee adjusted the ground. It was minute. No harm.
Pilfus heard humming and saw as a human female approached. He was not worried; if she spotted him he would, at best, appear as a six foot shadow.
Pilfus felt the tug of evil in the threads of the universe and he had an idea. He closed his eyes and whispered a prayer to Mother Fungi. He bent and brushed a finger tendril across the queen’s back and she began to glow.
Pilfus smiled, knowing he’d release a balanced force of good into the world. He could never let his father know.
