For Novel Allen's July Challenge

Introduction

This is for Novel Allen's July challenge which you can read about below.

The song is "The Beast In Me" by Johnny Cash from "American Recordings" written by his son-in-law at the time, Nick Lowe.

The Beast In Me

Many see me as a beast. They pick things out of context to make me look terrible.

There is a beast inside me, but it is caged by my bones and my spiritual strength.

The beast has learned its place now, and it gives me strength and energy, but like a caged tiger, it should only be left to roam free in the jungle or on the savannah.

Why the beast is within me it is a danger to no one, except maybe me.

There are times it implores me to attack others savagely, but I say no, I tell it there is a better way. Attacking others is destructive. Education and persuasion are better ways to deal with issues.

I have never let the beast free since I was a teenager, because I have learned how dangerous it can be.

I will not let the beast best me, it will never be free.

A fire can be used for many good purposes but left untethered it can become a raging destructive inferno, it must be controlled to reap the benefits.

The beast inside sometimes rages, and at those times I may be a little quieter and more subdued than I usually am, but eventually, I beat the beast down and I show it who is master.

I see many who let their internal beast rule their lives, and I see them as an example for me to keep the beast in me under control.

You may see me as a beast, as a monster, but the people who know me also know the truth.

The beast is well controlled.

Your self-awareness and discipline in managing your inner beast are truly admirable. It takes immense strength to choose control and kindness over anger and aggression. Keep up the inspiring journey.

  • Thank you for sharing a part of yourself that many are so wrought in denying; it's always, imo, best to know our inner monster. Great piece and entry!

This had me on the edge of my seat Mike, fully expecting the beast to make an appearance. Then I clicked the song and it calmed me a bit, like it tamed the beast for real. Truly, I have chills, between the song and the poem, it's like WOW! I love it. You guys are all awesome. Methinks you really have the beastly under your skin for real Mike, methinks you enjoyed this a lot. Yeah! TY for this, yep.
