There weren't always dragons in the Valley.

The dragons of the Valley were creatures like no other, their skin a light shade of red and their eyes yellow. They were tall and strong and had the body for it. And although they were not very smart, they did know how to use weapons; swords, spears, bows, and arrows. There are many tales around about these dragons

At first, there were only a few at the time. They all came into the Valley from other areas of land. The dragons in this area had never been bothered by the people, even after they'd taken control over what was left of the lands and villages nearby.

There were a few, but never that many to call a full pack of their dragons. The only ones who lived there belonged to the humans, not the dragon kind. It wasn't uncommon for one of those to find its way into the valley if one lived in the area long enough.

As it was, there was hardly a living thing in the valley that could stand up against the dragons. Even the villagers were mostly afraid to leave the valley unless they were going to be attacked themselves.

Some thought that the dragons might just be there to cause trouble. To make sure the humans never left. After all, the humans hadn't did anything tonearm the dragonkind, why should they do any differently?

One such villager was named Bors, a young farmer who was known for working too hard and sleeping too little. He knew he couldn't do much if he had to defend himself. But he'd try his best anyways, and maybe one day, someone would come looking for him. If they found him, they might have to deal with the dragon race, but there's nothing worse than being abandoned by people you love.

He hoped that someday when it all finally ended, that person would find him and tell him he'd made the right choice. That may be, he could finally feel safe, and that he didn't have to worry about hurting anyone anymore.

Bors was walking down one of the dirt roads outside of town when he saw something move behind a tree. A quick look around told him where it was coming from, so he quickly ran in the opposite direction. If there was something behind him, he wouldn't get away until he was out of sight, and that was unlikely to happen anytime soon.

By the time he reached the tree again, it had vanished. He looked behind the tree, hoping for the creature to appear once more. Nothing happened. With the creature gone, there was nowhere for him to run, so he slowly turned to look back at the place he'd seen it before. When he spotted the creature hiding behind another tree, he felt relieved. At least now he knew what was happening.

Slowly, Bors approached the tree. He peered between its branches, trying to catch a glimpse of whatever had been hidden behind them.

“Hey! You're gonna fall from there if you keep doing that!” a voice yelled. He flinched back from the tree and almost fell on his butt. He looked around, expecting to see someone standing there, ready to yell at him or give him a hard time. But there was no one in sight, and when he got closer to the tree, he could see no sign of whoever it was that had shouted at him.

When Bors looked to the tree's other side though, he could see the same figure standing there. They stared at him intently, clearly waiting for him to speak.

Bors stared at the strange man, unsure of what to say. For some reason, the fact that someone had noticed him made him nervous. The last time someone had noticed him, he'd tried to attack them. And then, head failed. Now, he had no idea what the stranger wanted with him. He'd probably got off scot-free, considering how he'd reacted to Bors. Maybe Bors could make it home. No, he couldn't. His mother would've killed him for running away and leaving her alone, no matter how scared she was.
