Strength
People look down on me and pretend that I don’t know that they do it. I can never talk to them, not really. I can never say anything to them about things of importance, things like the nature of good and evil, how these things we take for granted are merely imposters for the reality we can never know. If I make an attempt to tell anyone these things a look of befuddlement crosses their face.

The Curious Incident of the Man Who Had It All
I Sendera, 10:45 a.m. Yesterday. Almost now. I drag myself into the work building, past my oblivious secretary chatting on her cell, the stale coffee and day old taquitos (“Can we throw those out, Sissy?” “Why? Do you hate my kids?”), into my office, stare at my pile of files, contemplate my next move.

Blood and Bourbon
My grandfather used to say that hate is the flower grown from a seed planted in hostile ground. Earth is beautiful, but it’s full of rat holes. And a rat hole is where I found myself when I landed here. That old man’s words played over and over in my head every single shift I worked at Salacious. Humans are fucking gross! Some of them. That place was a magnet for those specific types. A hole in the wall establishment where the seedy and the mischievous like to hang out. That’s why I started working there. For the mischievous aspect, not the lack of decorum. Thought I’d come across some useful information. All I found were a bunch of low-level guys just trying to make enough money to party. That and an array of human kinks that turned my stomach. There was some quality blood now and then. One of the few things that made working there worth it. Patrick was the other reason. My job at Salacious was a way for me to keep my ear to the ground. Information comes freely to those who know how to listen. I needed a clean break from the persona I’d built at the club. So, I texted Rick and told him I quit. All that was six months ago, going on seven.

“What happened?” Michelle asked as she moved to try to find her phone to see what she might be able to see in the darkness. Her hands frantically searched for the device that would literally shed light in the darkness. “I found it,” she said with joyful glee.

They clung to each other in a desperate attempt to feel protected from the things that go bump in the night. Michelle’s breathing had become labored. Subsistent Lies
It was officially announced that court season had arrived and all of us were trying to busy ourselves with what could be done. Today was going to be the day that we were going to announce ourselves to any suitors who would take our hand and find which one would be to our pleasing. I sighed as I woke up and looked around my chamber. I still thought of the possibility of running away, maybe out of Anevia into Vespar. Then what? I knew that there was not much work for a girl of my age. There was the handsome Ambassador, Gabriel Giovanni, who did say that if it came down to it he would rightfully take me in. I sighed as I got out of bed. Even if it did come to that, I knew I couldn’t leave my sisters, alone with my mother. I went to the hearth and rekindled the fire as Isabella ran into the room. “Hurry sister, we leave in minutes now.”

Subsistent Lies
I grumbled as I searched the halls for Perius. I knew that it was he who had sent Lady Joan to me, and even more so he had better have good news for me. I found him wooing a lady with a lute and I rolled my eyes at the thought. Perius had spent too many days winning ladies hearts in the day and pleasing them at night. “A little early for love songs, don’t you suppose Perius?” I asked as I walked toward my man.

Subsistent Lies
I walked away from Zaria and shook my head. After the ball I had spent my night dreaming of her and when I woke the next morning I swore I would erase all thoughts of her completely. But then I saw her again as she was presented at court and…I threw my hands up in frustration as I entered the King’s study.
