A Good Deed
It was well after midnight; it was snowing, and my flight was the last to arrive. By the time my luggage came to me, delivered on a clunking conveyor belt, there were only five passengers left in this wannabe airport. To add insult to injury, I had to schlep my bag with the freshly damaged wheel through the snow from the terminal to the rental car center on the opposite side of the parking lot because the shuttle service had stopped for the night. At real airports, shuttles ran until the last flight arrived, but not here in Hicksville.

Greetings, old chap. Those last few levels of The Backrooms have really been taking a toll on your health, happiness, and sanity, eh? You seem tired, perhaps ready to finally take the weight off your feet. Though really, what did you anticipate when you chose to travel to this multi-leveled hell near Earth? Of course, we are not here to pass judgment. We are only here to assist you in your journey and to chronicle every step of it, so where is the fun in that? And because that's exactly what you'll find here, we sincerely hope you're prepared for some warm, traditional hospitality. Greetings from Level 5 of The Terror Hotel. As soon as you enter the main hall, your senses are caressed by a hazy scent of lavender-scented air freshener and the low, steady hum of smooth jazz. The other Backrooms levels have been openly hostile, or at the very least unwelcoming, to human presence, but something about this place just seems to invite you in. How could something that is, in theory, so incredibly relaxing also be so oddly terrifying? It is designed to appear to be a posh hotel from the 1920s or 1930s, possibly from the early 20th century. The Stanley Hotel, a century-old hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, which served as the inspiration for Stephen King's novel The Shining, and other half-formed memories of places you are unsure you ever visited as a child also come to mind.

Dear Explorer, welcome. We pull you back in just when you think you're out, don't we? But don't be concerned. As you travel further into the liminal nightmare known as "The Backrooms," we'll be here to keep you company. And hey, would you look at that? You're on Level 4! What a stunning location. Take a deep breath and inhale the aromas of burning rubber and warm, fresh copy paper. Toes can be spread out on the shorn, grey carpet. Observe the many anodyne walls' gloriously broad palette of gray. This level is referred to as "The Abandoned Office" for a reason. In a depressing way, it's funny. It's possible that earlier levels had a more overtly ominous or perilous appearance, but this one gives you a peculiar shiver. You proceed in eerie silence, keeping a safe distance from the wire-encrusted pillars that, in your mind, might be hiding any number of strange, aggressive monsters. As you go along, a strange lump forms in your throat. You've already been here. The offices back in your home reality are, if not exactly here, then somewhere close. You were an intern, rushing to get coffee orders and trying your hardest to remember the names of your superiors. You were never in a position you were proud of.
