Sunday Silence
Legs stretched across the couch, I wiggle my toes just enough to tell him I need his touch. He feels my foot twitch and, without looking up from the phone in his left hand, his right encloses warmly around my toes. A light squeeze. Reassurance. I sigh. We rest in the silence between us, thankful for a break from the chaos of life. The dog on my lap shifts, and I take a sip of my coffee. It is full of a relaxing depth that can only be found in this singular moment, a Sunday morning in sweet silence.

I found the rotting body I had buried the week before. It was finally ready for consumption! It all started as a child, my mother taught me the taste of humans was amazing. She’d hire a sitter for me and have me set the traps. I’d catch her and mother would take her to the woods and bury her. We’d dig her up when the rot kicked in and enjoy the meal. An antique ring made from braided hair and a golden shield caught my eye. It was not Victorian mourning jewelry but rather something a woman would give to her lover as he went off to war. I bought it, feeling that the shield must bear some clues, but to no avail. Then I met an eccentric lady with painted brows, wearing a scrimshaw necklace. Noting her love of antique jewelry, I showed her my ring. She was fascinated that the shield matched her family's earrings that graced her lobes. The ring had found its way home.
