Trees We Lay Amongst
It was a large orchard; the pear trees scraped against the sky and velvet white petals blanketed the ground. In February, petals took to the wind and traveled towards his house, crevicing themselves in his windowsill, slowly rotting as February turned into May. May would ripen the pears, gold and green teardrops heavy on the tree's limbs. The pear trees grew in rows, blurred rows. Their long branches reached to greet the sky, to kiss the searing California sun. Now the steady trunks of the trees were reduced to black and withered bark, scorched by fire. A thinned charred pear orchard.

Jenny Got Her Gun
Early September is bittersweet. Summer’s games and romance are consigned to memory. Washing machines have dissolved salt-tinged stains and leached away the coconut sweetness of suntan lotion. Bathing suits and beach towels are packed away. Kayaks and paddles, coolers and racquets are stored at the back of garages or in garden sheds. Crisp tan lines begin to blur. And school starts again.

Symphony
I. Death and Harmony Brisk-paced violin bows galloped forward before fading into grand silence, with the absence of noise soon accompanied by the flowing serenade of a harp. To the side, a stage door floated open to an urgent murmur as the stage director dragged Mr. Welch’s limp body away to the side of the open curtains. Mr. Welch, a prominent ambassador, was witnessing his daughter’s debut at the London Symphony Orchestra venue after a political assembly.

The Telephone Booth
Looking up at the clock hanging on the opposite side of the wall, it says 9:30 pm. All I can hear is beep, drip, beep, drip, beep, drip, beep, drip, beep, over and over again. I look to my right and I can see the street lights outside the window and the glow of the moon and stars hitting the sidewalk. When I look to my left all I see are the monitors that keep making all that racket. Nurses that keep walking in and out all through the night. How anyone sleeps in here I will never understand.

Heart Wide Open
Molly’s eyes fluttered open as her legs and arms reached toward the corners of her bed in a star fish position as she completed a deep, energizing stretch. Today was the first day of high school and she had a good feeling about it. She hopped out of her new queen size bed. Quite an upgrade from her twin size she thought. Of course, stuffed animals still adorned her bed. Molly could not yet bring herself to part with such childish objects, no matter how badly she wanted to grow up. Afterall, they had gotten her through some difficult times. She opened her door while simultaneously slipping on her robe and proceeded to make her way to the kitchen. Molly quickly ate her cereal of choice, Fruity Pebbles, with butterflies in her tummy. This sensation was entirely new. Despite her tom boy persona, she decided she wanted to make time to look more feminine this morning, possibly try that mascara and blush she had snuck from her older sister’s room. The way she had begun looking at boys had suddenly changed in ways she was still getting used to. Never had she felt awkward in the presence of a boy, not until yesterday when she met her new neighbor, Dan. He had just moved to Spokane, WA. and would be attending the same high school as her, a grade ahead.

Beneath the Pear Tree Leaves
“Now, this doesn’t mean that this is the end of your journey… There are other options, other avenues to be explored.” The doctor’s words barely break the surface of my thoughts. “I will be here for you every step of the way. Sometimes these things take time, but we can figure it out together.”

The Pear Tree
A simple thought glides sweetly through the dark depths of my imagination when I see them, a simple piece of who they are, how they become a part of me when they’re gone. A truth as immortal as the ends of time. Something told to us all in fairy tales, when the princess gets the boy or how the heroine saves us all from despair.

Blame it on the Boogie
Music surrounded me, drifting out from the stage at the club like a vibrational positive pulse. It shook through me, and I could feel the sensation of a magical energy pulsing through the night, bringing with it endless possibilities. He was here, and I could feel it; I could imagine myself standing right here with him, but would he accept me? My life had been plagued by differences since birth, and as I grew and learned, I only became more so, not just out of rebellion, but genuine inner truth and self acceptance. This was the night for our encounter, I could feel it, everything had been leading up to this moment, and just then our eyes met. He was on the other side of the room, and magnetically I could feel the pull drawing us together as he approached me with a smile. "Do you like my club?," he asked me. I smiled shyly back, and he grasped my hand in his, and led me over to the concession area. "Would you like something?," he asked me. Again, I smiled shyly. I wasn't certain my voice could be heard clearly in the loud club, so I shook my head 'No'. He looked me over with a smile, and asked, "Would you like to dance?" He motioned towards the center of the room, where everyone was dancing, and outstretched his hand toward me. I smiled, and nodded 'Yes,' and took his hand. We had been dancing quite awhile before he leaned in and asked, "Are you able to speak? I noticed the scar on your neck, but I didn't want to offend you, I like you very much." It was difficult for me to whisper, but leaning so close, I decided to attempt to softly reply, "I can speak and sing, it is just difficult to raise my voice." "Let's go somewhere, where we can talk," he said, pulling me towards the door out into the night. You could still hear the echoes of the music reverberating outside the building. I watched as two bats flew past the street light, and turned my gaze to the full moon and star filled sky. I felt him wrap his arms around me. "I sing too," He told me, "My guitar is in my car over there," he continued as he pulled me off toward the vehicle. He held the car door for me to get in. Soon, we were seated side by side with the radio on. He had put his arm about me. "I feel like I have known you my whole life," He said to me, breaking the silence. "That is not possible," I responded, "I am a time travelling vampire," and then, I bit him, knowing that this time we could have eternity together...
