Black Velvet
Le gâteau. It looked delicious. Or rather he, for he was as masculine in the ways with which dark chocolate had been in him infused, and atop his skin with icing slathered. He was brought into this life however, unknowing of his delicacy, unaware of his handsomeness. He simply had been removed from the kiln where his components were warmed and roused.

The New King
The fire cracked and spit forth sparks as the dry piece of wood released the last of its air. The sparks sailed up before falling back to earth, the bright embers fading as their heat died away. Now, it was just ash that would soon mix with the dirt and be forgotten. Those gathered around the fire did not particularly like the wild and jumping tendrils of death that whirled about in front of them. But it was part of the ceremony for choosing a new leader, a ritual that births a new king of the forest. Buffalo watched the flames dance, losing himself in the fond memories of his life. His time was passing and soon, he would be with his ancestors. Before that, however, a new leader must be chosen. It was an important position, not envious but necessary for the way of the woods and prairie to continue. Sitting in a semi-circle facing buffalo were a group of other animals, six to be exact. Three who wished to be the next king and three who were chosen to assist them.

Mr. Ed You Cater
Watching Mr. Ed, the Talking Horse, on television as a child was a significant step in realizing my calling to learn how animals talk. The series was popular back in the day when were few televisions in homes and fewer programs to watch. I appreciated seeing human traits assigned to this smiling beast. Now hold your horses. Don't judge a horse by its saddle. This was a story of an educator. Mr. Ed presented a model of how deep interspecies relationships can cater to specific needs, and provide spiritual nourishment akin to that of a master teacher. Mr. Ed recognized, " It's bigger than both of us." As Marshal McLuhan says, "The medium is the message." A good horse is worth its fodder.

Unlikely Observer
Low-hanging branches whipped Ari’s skin, but he hardly noticed their harsh sting. His legs furiously pumped as he raced his bike down the woodland path. Tears left his sight blurry, but he knew the path like the back of his hand. A sharp turn ahead would have toppled another biker, but Ari leaned into the curve, shifted his weight effortlessly to bank the curve and kept speeding through the trees. A steep dip in the trail, a small wooden footbridge over the stream, and the final push up the embankment brought Ari safely to his sanctuary.
