The Sun Shines Bright
It's been 6 years, 5 months, and 22 days since the first signs of infection. We don't know where they came from exactly. All we know is that, one day, they were just...here. To think, I used to take the sunrise for granted everyday. Now, the sunrise is my savior. It's the only thing that stops the creatures. Even the sun, however, is only temporary. I've never been more scared of the dark as I have been since their arrival.

Constellations at the end of the world
“I dreamt of it again last night,” he said grumpily as he rolled out of bed. I stared at him, still trying to figure out how to come back to life after ten hours of sleep. It was the longest I’d slept in a while. I missed being able to be lazy in bed, watching movies while snoozing the day away. It’s amazing what I miss as I get older.

The Man on The Sidewalk: chapter 2
Brian sat on the bed doing his best to keep his composure as he looked around the nurses' office. Brian had been here before a multitude of times when he got sick. The small room seemed to have gotten smaller as the school nurse looked at Brian annoyed.

Golden Bonds
It was getting late; everyone was starting to settle down in a circle around the campfire. I passed around the marshmallows, chocolate bars, and graham crackers in preparation for the smores. My boyfriend Mitch turned off the music and was ready to initiate our usual tradition of sleepless nights, which was the telling of scary stories around the fire.

The Cottage
The two-lane highway dimmed as shadows crept in from the forest, flanking it on both sides. Nora turned on the car’s lights, the twin beams cutting through the growing darkness. I knew I should have left earlier, she scolded herself, checking her phone GPS one more time to make sure she wouldn’t miss the turn. She scanned the road ahead for any animals that might think it was safe to cross and saw nothing. That would have been a relief, had ‘nothing’ not been her only sight for the past hour and a half. She had never driven on this stretch of highway before, but it struck her as odd that no one else was driving; it was only just after 8:00pm. Get a grip Nora; you’ve been watching way too many horror movies lately. To ease her senseless paranoia, she tuned into a station that played classic rock and turned the volume up. She smiled; much better than the news station, especially with the anchors going on about the atrocious endeavours of criminals, both convicted and free.

A Rose Under the Bull
The streets are bustling with people dressed smartly in navy, khaki, and black suits, with touches of patterned neckties, red lipstick, and sparkling jewelry or wristwatches. There are those who adorn Gucci and Louis Vuitton bags and some trying to make a name for themselves in creative mixtures of vintage clothing and modern hairstyles. The smell of sweet roasted almonds and sizzling gyros are as consistent as the sounds of honking yellow taxis, yet the streets never had the stale sameness that came from the slower living I found in the suburbs of my southern hometown.

Baby's New Friend
They arrived as the sun was descending past the horizon, the last few moments of sunlight left stretching their shadows out into infinity. Baby grinned at her friend Laura, riding next to her atop the cart filled with deliveries and other mail. It was the first year that presented the greatest difficulties, though and now some sense of normality had returned to the world. That was what the older people kept telling her, anyway, though Barbra felt that nothing was normal about the time before she was born.
