The Lesser Deliberations of the Papal Court
1. Prologue The Pope took his coffee black. It was brought to him promptly by a servant, polished shoes echoing off marble floors, and set beside his gilded throne on a silver tray. Steam caught on a draft wafted an aroma both pleasant and strange to his nose. It was earthy and nutty, with a hint of caramel; distinctly different from the wines and ales he was accustomed to. So Inviting, the Pope thought, though the sentiment was somewhat undercut by the way his servant winced as he placed his fingers on the handle of the ceramic cup.

New Beginnings
‘I shouldn’t have done it,’ Jane sighed to herself as the rickety cart thumped over the muddy ridges left by yesterday’s Cobb and Co mail run, ‘but it’s done now, and it can’t be undone.’ Looking back over her shoulder at the barely visible sea of grubby white tents flapping in the summer breeze, she resolved that there would be no more looking back, and turned away from the goldfields of Victoria, her past, and her marriage to Denis Fagan, the sparkly-eyed, champagne tongued Irish gold miner who had lost himself in the booze and despair of many a destitute miner on the Ballarat diggings.

The Underwood Dragon
Lilly is on school holidays; she went camping with her parents. She is sitting in her new Landcruiser, her parents assume there is enough space inside the Landcruiser to sleep and eat. But Lilly knows there's not enough space in the car. Lilly has a dog named Jeffy. He is coming to camp. Her brother Jordan does not want to come because Jeffy licks him and then Jeffy’s saliva comes out of his mouth and dribbles on Jordan's pants. I know that is a bit disgusting anyway, but Lilly’s parents decided that they were going to Underwood Island. In stories and news Lilly heard there are volcanoes, which are big and black. It has fire in it. Lilly said she is not scared of volcanoes if they do not erupt during my school holidays.
