Apple
The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. He was kind to her. Always. And fair. Maybe not always fair. But when he wasn’t, his bias leaned in toward her favor. He was generous, too. And patient, of course. And he gave her this space. All of this space, and only this space. Only the space illumined by the light filtering through that one window.

Little Kingdom
The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. Margot lay on her bed, as always, and gazed out to the world of trees that leaned and pitched crooked and forlorn, often without leaves. She couldn’t remember life before Frank’s care, and when he took her in she was otherwise unwanted, as he put it. Only little snippets of Margot’s origin came from him, and only when he was ready to share. Whether the truth was too painful for his own heart, or that he didn’t want to overwhelm her with details, she didn’t know. When Margot was young she’d beg for tales of her childhood, but even her pleading eyes were met with resistance.

It Lurks Among the Pine
As I write this, the mountains seem so dark and damp from the freshly fallen snow; too early in the season to settle on the forest floor. Incandescent yellows and fiery orange leaves climb the mountainside in broad strokes among the primarily piney wood.

The Weaving. Runner-Up in Behind the Last Window Challenge.
The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. She sighed, again. Over and over, every life, every cycle. Same day, different millennia. The shape of her body changed, but not the Work. Not the threads, not the rules, not the weave.
