The Masters
A Terrifying Tremulous Trees story “They’re talking loudly, Twigly,” Charlie said while sitting on my top. “This should be interesting, Muata. Those Karate masters might fight each other,” Honon said from atop Mr. Murder Tree. Honon, Mr. Murder Trees friend, had connected to Mr. Murder tree almost 200 years ago. To keep his friend alive, Mr. Murder Tree put special soil made from a meteorite into Honons food, and now he can live as long as the trees. I gave Charlie the same soil, but Charlie is only in his late thirties.

The Fabled Forest and the Harbinger of Doom.
In a far away land, beyond mists never navigated, upon shores uncharted, there grows a fabled forest. Not the sort of forest one might find in a park or around a great lake, or even at the edge of a frontier. It is vast, it is deep, and it is self aware. Every living thing that dwells beneath the sentient canopy possesses a measure of cognition, emotional intelligence, ethical idealism and above all, a hubris much like any member of a community that is ill content to become part of the scenery, to drift through existence unnoticed or apathetic towards what makes one unique. The fabled forest is filled with such highly attuned characters.

They are waiting for us at dusk in the neglected park on the edge of town. I touch Zara's shoulder. The Hum gets louder when I do. It always does, but for the first time, I can hear the Murmur that Zara has always claimed to whisper inside of it. Finally hearing it would be a thrill to me except for the thugs that posture before us, blocking our way. One of them sniggers like a moron.
