The Voiceless: part 1
The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. She awoke with no idea how she got here and only fragmented memories of her prior life, but she didn’t have to remember the outside world to know she wanted no part of it. A small sliver of sunlight shone through the window, illuminating one corner of the room where she lay. She rolled onto her side in the stuff metal cot, turning away from the light. The light was bad… She didn’t know how or why; she just knew.

The World Beyond the Window

Someone Coming, Doing Worse
The bartender had waited long enough. He was neither accustomed to waiting nor accustomed to being made to wait. All night and most of the day, he served ore dogs their alcohol; a drunk mercenary with a story to tell rarely waited long to yield one. He was a nosy and dissatisfied man, and he liked to hear the exploits of people tougher and rougher than he. This woman, though, with her hair plaited tight against her scalp and her exposed skin a tangle of scars, was silent. She was three drinks deep and hadn’t spoken since requesting her first one. Her only solicitation was to fish more coin out of her pocket to slam on the counter. Most other ore dogs would have been drunkenly regaling the bartender with war stories and tales of lewd romps by now, but the one in front of him only sipped her clear alcohol in a slow and deliberate manner.

Little Blackbird
The shine of the light blinded her. She could see nothing of The Power and The Omnipotence before her. She had never before been granted an audience with The Omega before this moment. She had not sought the attention she now had been granted. The gravity of her prayer had grounded and humbled The Empathy before which she found herself. She gently folded the ivory and golden feathers that protruded from her shoulder blades around herself as she knelt before The Kind.

The Era
The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. He stepped in front of her to calmly close the door to the room past his desk in the office. But she’d already seen a glimpse of the beyond. Dhristi did not understand what she had just observed, except that viewing it was forbidden. The tendrils of electricity flashed and she heard banging in the distance and the door shut with a click. She didn’t know why The Protectors forbid her and her family from going beyond the compound. It had always been that way. As long as anyone could remember.
